“Your hair is fine,” said Linn as she broke away from the dance and whirled to a stop beside a startled Meivu.
Her fingers paused in running through her hair again - she hadn’t even realized! - and she tried to think up an excuse.
The younger spirit, born a mere twenty winters ago, winked conspiratorially and said, “It’s all right. I look up to you, you know. To be able to leave and see the world… and then have to come back to this and have everyone act like you’re staying, well, that just sounds awful!”
Meivu glanced around. The music had reached a crescendo, sending her sisters into a frenzy, and the only others not joining in the circle were far enough away.
“You want to leave, Linn? Really want to go out into the world? Not many humans understand spirits - I was constantly dodging the guard my first year, they wanted to lock me up as a freak of nature with how blue my hair was.”
“Yes! I just want to see what it’s like, living with humans. And seeing things besides forest all around me. I love Mother, I do, but-”
“Shh. I understand. You are young still. Very well, I will speak with the eldest sisters and see what we can arrange.”
