I am BACK!

Master Work: Sparksong
Challenges/Toppings: Vanilla #4 (I can't believe you (don't) know how to ___), Chocolate #1 (loyalty/trust), Red Hot Cinnamon #3 (flare/smoke signal)
Rating: Er, PG I guess? Mentions of war. And drinking.
Title: S.O.S.: Start Our Siege
Summary: “I swear you’re part lizard.”
Notes: Meh. I’ll get back in the groove at some point. I’m not certain if this is the version of events I’m going to keep as canon, though. As usual nothing is chronological so I can't tell. (Also, finally! The very day I went to post this was the day cluster 7 died, what a bad time to check in on LJ, huh?)

"What are you doing?"

“Watch and learn, darlin’ dear.” Takoda winked and shoved his pack into the other man’s hands before shimmying up the stone wall and disappearing over the other side.

Conri huffed as quietly as he could - the guards could be awakening for all he knew, as he had never tried the sleeping spell on a human before and hadn’t the slightest idea how long it lasted - and hunkered down behind a bush. Could he trust Takoda to do this job properly? Could he trust anyone but himself with something so important? Takoda was skilled, clearly. He’d never seen anyone climb like that before, didn’t even know it was possible. But it wasn’t skill that was the problem.

There was a shout from behind the wall, in the courtyard of the fort. Conri dove out of the way as Takoda jumped off the wall above and landed right where he had been. He rolled to a stop, flashed a grin. “Run, darlin’!”

Conri didn’t need to be told twice. The smoke from the burning guard tower could probably be seen for miles, and certainly by the advancing army whose signal it was.

The two of them stopped to watch the proceedings, Takoda flopping down on the grass and smiling up at him so wide Conri wondered if his face hurt. “Oh darlin’ you doubted me! Haha!” he exclaimed suddenly. Conri rolled his eyes to hide his unease, sitting down in as dignified a manner as possible.

Job-drunk, Conri thought, even as Takoda reached into his other satchel - the one he hadn’t left Conri to carry - and pulled out two bottles of wine doubtlessly stolen from the tower before it became a smoking husk. He accepted one and sat nursing it while Tac ran a commentary on the skirmishes of the first battle of the new war, their war, in the valley below.
