Note(s): As the opening mentions, this takes place in 1129 AW, two months after the birth of Princess Abigail. Abigail is Analise's second live child and Henri's fifth live, legitimate child. Analise was Queen of Czyna up until the mysterious death of her husband. She escaped the country with her son after Olek staged a coup to oust her from her position and took her son away from her.

The summer of 1129 was coming to a close, when King Henri staged his next masque.

The masque would be to celebrate the birth of the King’s daughter, Princess Abigail, his first by his new wife.
Though the child was a girl, Henri was enamored with the baby princess and even more so with her mother, so a masque it was.

“Who are you supposed to be?” Jakub asked his mother, Queen Analise.

Analise smiled at her son as her ladies helped her into her costume.

“I am to be Caria, the mother goddess,” Analise said looking at herself in the mirror.

“I don’t remember any Caria in any of the tales Father told me,” Jakub said.

Analise stopped at the mention of her first husband. Lately Jakub had been bringing up his father more often. She wasn’t sure if she was ready to deal with this just yet.

“Caria is the mother goddess in Passian mythology,” Analise said walking over to her son. She pressed a kiss on his dark head.

“How do I look?”

Jakub grinned. “Like a goddess.”

“I hear the Queen will be at this masque,” Marceline Teodeomiro said to her husband.

“Yes, I think she will be.”

“It’s far too early for her to be out in public,” Marceline sniffed. “Queen Therese would never think to be out in public only two months after the birth of a child.”

Her husband sighed and pressed a kiss on his wife’s cheek.

“Give it up, Marceline.”

Marceline ignored her husband. “I wonder what she’ll wear?”

The music was lively and the nobility of Monde danced around the main ballroom in the Spring Palace. All eyes were on Queen Analise. She looked stunning in a gold Passian inspired gown. She had a wreath of olive leaves in her dark hair and she wore diamond earrings.

“Everyone is staring at you,” Henri whispered to his wife.

Analise smiled. “I am pleased. I hope it means they like me.”

Henri laughed. “You have been queen for over a year now. Why wouldn’t they like you?”

“I am a foreign queen of that heretic religion from Bioud and I’ve just given birth to a daughter. Do I need to go on?”

Henri chuckled.

The music came to an end and the crowd clapped. Henri stood up.

“The Queen and I welcome you all to celebrate the birth of our daughter and to a new future of Monde,” Henri said in a booming voice.

The crowd started to talk amongst themselves. What did he mean by a new future?

“And now,” Henri said holding out his hand to Analise. “My lady and I will dance.”

Analise beamed as she stood and took her husband’s hand. She let him lead her to the center of the dance floor.
Henri smiled at her.

“This is to our glorious future, Analise,” Henri said.

Analise smiled as the music began again.

Henri twirled her around. Analise laughed as they danced closely. She could see the faces of the people watching her. Some were smiling, some were frowning, but it was one face she saw that made her heart stop.

“Baranski!”

“What?” Henri said above her head.

“It’s him! It’s Baranski!” Analise said trembling slightly. She didn’t know if it was from anger or fear.

Henri slowed down. “Who’s Baranski?”

“He’s Olek’s right hand man. I can’t believe he’d send him this far away. Why is he here?”

Henri looked in his wife’s direction. He saw a sandy haired man watching them. He couldn’t make out his features, but the man didn’t take his eyes off them.

“Do not worry yourself over him,” Henri said softly. “I’ll get my men on him.”

Analise took a deep breath. “He kept my son away from me. He’s probably here to take him back.”

“Jakub’s home is here with us. I won’t allow him to leave the country.”

Analise gripped his hands. “You don’t understand, Olek and his cronies…they play dirty. They do not care about laws and regulations.”

The music stopped and Henri pulled her firmly to him.

“You forget to whom you talk, Analise. I can be as conniving as the next man.”

Analise took a deep breath. She wanted to believe him. She wanted to have hope.

“But-.“

Henri tipped her chin with his finger.

“There are no buts. Trust me, Analise,” he said firmly.

Analise looked into her husband’s baby blue eyes. Could she trust him? Would she ever be able to trust anyone again?

“I will,” she said.

She decided to try.
