“You can’t keep coming here so often, Gilles.”
Cosette led Gilles into the sitting room. He had been to Sohmes House so often that even the staff had gotten used to him. But though she welcomed his presence, she wished he would stay away; for both of their sakes.
“I only wanted to see you,” he said when she sat down across from him.
“I’m a married woman, Gilles. You are lucky that Alexandre is such forgiving man or else I’m sure there’d be consequences.”
Gilles chuckled. “Cosette, don’t make excuses for Alexandre. I’ve known the man since I was a boy. He’s a good man, yes, but he is distant, no?”
Cosette played with the rings on her fingers. She knew he was waiting for an answer, but she refused to answer it.
“He doesn’t love you like I love you, Cosette.”
“Gilles!” She said alarmed.
“It is the truth,” he said bending down next to her. “I have never loved anyone like I love you.”
Cosette looked into blue eyes. Though he joked around often, he seemed more serious now. It disturbed her.
“I am married, Gilles. I am carrying my lord husband’s child. You must respect that. You must respect me.”
He sighed and stood up. Cosette looked up at him.
“I will respect your wishes, Cosette.”
She smiled.
“But just for the moment, let me stay with you. Allow me that?”
She nodded slowly. He returned to his seat and together they sat, watching each other.
