Aignen watched the little queen. She had been such a handful lately. It had only been a year since she’d been crowned in Morelessa.

Matilide tried to get up from the small chair that he had her tied to. The rope wasn’t tight, but he knew she couldn’t break it.

“There will be no moving for you, Your Highness.”

“You will refer to me as Your Majesty,” Matilide said clawing at the rope. “As I am your queen and as your queen I demand you release me!”

“Queens don’t hit their playmates.”

“She took my doll!”

“Queens share.”

Matilide slumped back in the chair. She glared at him through dark blue eyes.

“I shan’t like to be queen if I have to share.”

The door to the nursery opened and the Queen Dowager, Agna, stepped inside. Her white blonde hair was bound in a low bun and she wore a simple circlet. She frowned slightly when she saw her daughter.

“I don’t think your method of discipline will work, Aignen.”

Aignen didn’t turn around. He kept his eye on the little Queen.

“She must be taught that she cannot behave like a simple peasant child. She is the Queen. She must be gracious and giving if she wants the people to love her.”

“Suppose I don’t want the people to love me?” Matilide said shaking the chair. “A good monarch should be feared.”

“And where did you learn that?”

Matilide didn’t answer as she continued to shake the chair.

Aignen stood up and walked the little ways between his chair and the little Queen’s. She looked up at him. Her eyes defiant and her lips set in a firm grimace.

“A good monarch will be loved, Your Majesty. But a great monarch will be both loved and feared.”

Matilide turned her head away from him. Aignen squatted down in front of her.

“Look at me, Matilide.”

She continued to look away from him. Aignen sighed and turned her chin towards him.

“The people love you, Matilide. A monarch cannot rule without the good will of his people. Your father knew that.”

Matilide stared at him. “You dare mention my father?”

“I knew your father a lot better than you did, little Queen.”

Matilide blew out air through her nostrils. She kept her gaze on the man before her.

“Do you want to be a good ruler like your father?”

Matilide bit her lip.

“Answer me, little Queen.”

“Yes!”

Aignen smiled. “Then I’ll show you how to rule. I’ll teach you how to exert your power and your mother will teach you all the virtues of a good queen. You will have to be all of these. There is no in between.”

Matilide nodded.

“You will learn to share with your playmates, Matilide?”

“Yes.”

Aignen nodded as well. “I will un-tie you now. You will go to the little girl and apologize. Do we have an understanding?”

“Yes.”

Aignen stood up and loosened the knot that held Matilide to the chair. They dropped to the floor. She stood up and looked up at her mother.

“Shall we go?”

Matilide looked at Aignen. She turned away and took the hand her mother held. Agna led her daughter out of the nursery.

Aignen picked up the rope. He hoped to the God Above that he wouldn’t have to use it again, but the little Queen was far from biddable. Still he would find a better method to teach her.
