Notes: This piece takes place in 1088 AW. Elisabetta is the eldest daughter of the Canillian duke, Fiorello of Temra. Her father has betrothed her to the Duke of Cadomiselle, a duchy in Monde. Elisabetta is the future mother of the four Everart siblings of Generation B thus making her the maternal grandmother to the du Bois and Fitzbois grandchildren of Generation C as well as the paternal grandparents to the Everart siblings of Generation C.

Elisabetta was in her bedchamber packing up things with her lady maid. She went through the clothes carefully.
Some of the gowns were at least four years old. Elisabetta counted herself lucky that she hadn’t gotten any taller in that time. But her bosom and hips had expanded.

“I think we’ll have to take these out a bit, Denisa,” she said to the maid.

Denisa nodded and gathered the gowns in her arms. As she was walking out of the chamber, Elisabetta’s mother, the Duchess of Temra, came into the chamber.

Elisabetta smiled when she saw her mother.

“Hello Mamma,” she said leaning in to kiss her mother’s cheek.

Alessandra smiled.

“I see your packing is going well.”

Elisabetta nodded.

“I know we can’t afford new things for your trousseau, Lia.”

“Mamma, I know our situation. The Duke knows our situation. I’m sure he won’t mind.”

Alessandra sighed. “I have something for you, Lia.”

Elisabetta stopped and turned to her mother. “Mamma?”

Alessandra pulled a worn velvet bag from behind her back. Elisabetta stared at it.

“What’s in the bag?”

Alessandra smiled and opened the bag. She pulled out a long dark violet gown. It was simple with a few gold trimmings here and there, but Elisabetta could tell that the fabric had been expensive.

“Mamma, where did you get this?”

“I sold some of my jewelry and-“

“Mamma, you didn’t!”

Alessandra looked into the grey eyes she shared with her daughter. Elisabetta was her eldest. She didn’t complain and she didn’t ask for much. She knew her daughter was happy to be married and that she looked forward to going to Monde. But Alessandra didn’t want her to know how much she was going to miss her. Her first baby girl was leaving her and it pained her to let her go.

“Yes, I did. I wanted you to have a new gown for when your husband first lays his eyes on you. You look stunning in violet and it’ll make a statement. Remember our words?”

“Forever may we keep it,” Elisabetta and Alessandra said the Loacharno motto together. Alessandra smiled at her daughter.

“I’ll pay you back, Mamma. His Grace is the richest duke in Monde and a generous allowance was stipulated in the betrothal papers and-“

Alessandra pressed her finger to her daughter’s lips. Elisabetta looked up at her.

“I do not want any repayment. This is for you, cara. I paid for this out of my own pocket because I wanted you to have something to remember me by.”

Elisabetta hugged her mother. She laid her head on her chest.

“I’d never forget you, Mamma.”

Alessandra stroked her daughter’s wild brown curls. “I know, cara.”

Elisabetta clung to her mother. She wondered if she would ever see her again after she left Canillian land. It was one of those things that she brooded on at night, but had never voiced in the daylight. There were always letters and she supposed that they would have to do.
