Title: A Stop on the Road

Summary: Some people are just convenient, as Meivu can tell you.
Notes: FYI, most of the sole continent is south of the equator’s equivalent. I'm also trying to introduce my mains (all eight of 'em) before I get to the nitty-gritty. With this you've met four (+ ickle!Zahra), one has been mentioned only, and two have yet to be seen in any form...

Herbs. More magical than actual magic, Meivu thought, taking a pinch of dried maidensweed out of her pouch and sprinkling it over the fire. The moment the leaves touched the flames, they flickered wildly and the smoke turned a faint purple. She breathed it in - the heady aroma which was so good for fatigue and minor aches. Immediately her head cleared of the fog that had been plaguing her since the day before. Well, actually she had seen it coming, had known that eventually her odd sleep schedule would lead to the feeling of cotton in her brain, as she had experienced the sensation many times before. Such was the danger of regular travel between the kingdoms, particularly in the snowy South, and particularly while alone.

The fire slowly burned down as she breathed the smoke, and while she was no longer at all sleepy, she closed her eyes for a minute, to better listen to the world around her. Far off, an owl hooted, soft and mournful. The fire crackled. If she strained, she could even hear the glacier stream some distance away, meandering under a thin layer of ice, just as she could feel it in her veins. All was right with the world, her senses told her.

Still, she could not linger. She needed real sleep, no matter how fresh-faced maidensweed made her feel for the moment. And the longer she was out in the wilderness, the more likely she would be attacked by wolves. If Briar was here, he could just take watch while I slept, she thought, not for the first time.

With a sigh, she rose and doused the fire, preparing to continue the trek alone. She found herself thinking about Briar again - how he could take watch, cook food, have no choice but to listen while she talked…

She didn’t miss her regular travel companion, certainly not, but he was convenient.
