Notes: This takes place in 2007 sometime around March to April. MHHS colors are celadon and white thus that's why the girls are wearing the jerseys in that color.
“Come on Rodriguez, hit the ball!” Her teammate Monica called.
Mari stepped back and waited for the volleyball. It came in her direction and she hit it with the palm of her hand. The ball hit the net.
“Rodriguez!” Sara yelled.
Mari sighed and wiped her face on the celadon jersey that they were required to wear for gym. She wished that this would hurry and be over with. She was no good at team sports.
“Break,” the gym teacher called.
Mari walked off the court and went to the side. She sighed. She wondered what the girls were doing right now. Jennika sucked royally at gym, so they probably could have been miserable together. Alexa on the other hand was rather good at sports.
“Back to the court,” the teacher called.
Mari sighed and resumed her place.
“This is the last round. Whoever wins this only has to walk three laps next week instead of four,” the teacher said looking at her watch.
Mari frowned. If her team lost, then the rest of her teammates were going to blame her for them losing. It wasn’t like it hadn’t happened before.
“Go!”
One of the girls on the other side served the ball over the net. Monica hit to Sara and then Sara hit it over the net.
Mari had some hope. If they just left her out of the equation, then they’d win.
Sara caught the ball and then posed it before serving it again. Jamie, a rather tall girl, hit the ball hard and towards Mari. Without thinking, Mari put her hands over her head.
“What are you doing?!” Monica yelled.
The teacher blew her whistle.
“We have our winners. Congrats girls,” she said picking up the volleyball.
Jamie smirked at her from across the net. Mari sighed.
“What was that, Rodriguez?” Monica said coming up to her.
“I thought it was going hit me in the face,” Mari said explaining.
“That is why you hit the ball,” Monica said testily. “To keep it from hitting you in the face!”
Monica stormed away with Sara and the other girls following her to the locker rooms.
Mari sighed heavily and slowly followed them. Why did she have to suck in gym? Her parents were passable athletes. So why couldn’t she have gotten those genetics? God must have been gambling with her genetics, she decided.
