Notes: This takes place in 1118 AW, a few months after
I Fought the Law. Sieur Mathias Chaput is the elder brother of
Marceline Teodemiro, one of Queen Therese's principal ladies in waiting and married to one of the Ibonia's ambassadors to Monde.
“Good morning, gentleman,” Henri said.
The rest of the council greeted him.
“So what’s the first order of business?” Henri asked. He turned to his right where Jean Luc was sitting.
“I believe we should discuss the Amende,” Jean Luc said handing some papers to him.
Henri took the papers. He glanced over them.
“His Grace, the Duke of Cadomiselle proposed this law a few months ago. It should have been approved by now,” Henri said rubbing his chin.
The room was quiet.
“No one wants to speak up?”
Someone cleared their throat.
“I’ll speak up, Your Majesty.”
Mathias Chaput stood up from his seat. He nodded at Henri.
“We don’t think this bill should be made into law,” he said.
Henri clicked his tongue. “And why is that, Chaput?”
Mathias blinked, but continued “It is a tradition that all the monarchs must have His Holiness’s permission and blessing to marry. It sets an example for the people.”
“The thing about tradition though Sieur Chaput is that you can always make new ones. We are in a new century and we’re moving towards the future. Do you not think that the tradition is archaic?”
“I do not, Your Majesty.”
Henri smiled. “Well I do. Does anyone else have anything to say about the bill? Truly it is a simple bill and it should have been passed already.”
“Your Majesty would this bill dissolve your marriage to the Queen?”
Henri turned back to Mathias.
“Not entirely, why do you ask?”
“We do not agree with your bid to divorce the Queen.”
Henri grit his teeth. “And who are these we you speak of?”
“Our party, Your Majesty,” Mathias said fiddling with his jerkin.
“Party?”
“The conservative party, Your Majesty.”
Henri sat back in his chair. It seemed they were gathering support. He turned to Jean Luc.
“Do you know about these parties?” Henri whispered to him.
Jean Luc nodded.
Henri sighed.
“My marriage is my personal business, Sieur Chaput. It is between me, the Queen, and of course the Beatua. I suggest you stay out of it,” Henri said firmly.
“But,” Mathias started.
“I will not discuss it anymore!” Henri said raising his voice.
Mathias plopped down in his seat.
Henri watched him for a moment before turning back to Jean Luc.
“What is the next order of business?”
“Uh renewing our alliance with Iberte,” Jean Luc said producing the papers.
