Title: Road Trip
Word Count: 5,391
Summary: Nate and Helen takes a road trip and discuss their future.
Notes: I had a binge for Pleasant Surprise, but I have t work a little more on that. I hope everyone enjoys it too. Anyway remember Nate and Helen? I have more stories about them and will probably do a sundae that shows their childhood, but this is when they decide to take a road trip and talk about their future together. Enjoy! I had a lot of fun on the Olympics! :)
10. Fog
“Nate, pull over, it’s too thick!”
“We’ll be fine. I have the fog lights on.”
“Nate, please!”
“Alright, alright,” Nate steered to the side and cut the power. He sat back and looked at the blanket of fog in front of them. “Hmm, it is pretty thick now that I think about it.”
“I’m glad you see it.”
Nate chuckled and turned to Helen. He reached over and smoothed back a loose lock of her hair. Helen giggled as she sat back in her seat.
“I can’t believe it. I’m out here with you.”
“You said you wanted to leave and we left.” Nate grinned.
“I know, but I didn’t expect you to sweep me away.” Helen smiled. “I have so much to do though. I have to look over my new recipes and check over my application for my stay in France and--” She was cut short by Nate’s lips. She placed her hand on his cheek and returned it.
Nate pulled back with a smile. “I know. I wanted to spend some time with you before you left. I can take you back though, if you want.”
Helen shook her head. “I really don’t want to go back, not yet anyway. I’ll send a quick message to Lil so they won’t worry. Besides, I wanted to spend some time with you too.”
Nate grinned as Helen returned it. She took his hand and linked their fingers together. “Where should we go?”
“Marcus invited us to the Los Angeles Film Festival to see his recent film. Want to go?”
“Sure, it’ll be fun to see him again. Does this mean we’re going on a road trip?”
“Yep!”
“Wonderful,” Helen smiled and squeezed his hand.
Nate returned it and brushed their lips together. “Want to wait for the fog to clear in the backseat?”
“You read my mind.” Helen kissed the corner of his mouth.
Nate moved to the back and patted the seat next to him. Helen giggled and sat next to him. She wrapped her arms around Nate’s neck and pulled him close. Nate wrapped his arms around her waist as he deepened the kiss.
They enjoyed waiting for the fog to clear.
6. Flash Flood
“I can’t believe it’s raining so hard.” Helen looked outside the window.
“Good thing this hotel was on the road. Too bad we got caught in the shower.” Nate placed the towel around his neck and handed one to Helen.
“Thanks. I hate we got caught in it too.” Helen sighed as she dried her hair.
“So is it true what they say?”
“About what?”
“About black women and their hair,”
Helen laughed and poked his side. “I don’t know about others, but I don’t like to get my hair wet.” She poked his side again.
Nate laughed and moved out the way of her finger. “Your hair looks so cute wet, though.”
“To you it does. I can’t stand it. I have to rewash it, condition it, wash that out, then dry it. It’s a process that I don’t mind doing once a week, but I hate doing it because of rain.”
“Well, I still think it looks cute.” Nate kissed her cheek and settled an arm around her waist. “Want to order room service?”
“In a bit, I want to watch the rain.” Helen leaned against him.
“Sure.” Nate pulled her close and kissed her hair.
“Hey,”
“Yeah,”
“Do you think I’ll make it in France? I’m so nervous about going and cooking there.”
“I know you’ll do fine. You’re an amazing chef. Why else would you be picked?”
“I’m still nervous, though.”
Nate turned her around and tipped her head to stare in her eyes. “You’ll be wonderful. I know you will and I won’t be far. I’m a phone call, text, email, Skype, webcam, and plane ticket away. I’ll always be here, so don’t hesitate to call.”
Helen hugged Nate with a relieved smile. “Thank you,”
Nate pulled her close. “Anytime.”
14. Natural Disaster
Helen sat at the counter of the diner as she waited for Nate to use the bathroom. It was a nice little place along the road to grab a quick bite to eat. She didn’t think they would be in Pennsylvania, so fast, but Nate proved her wrong. She was only happy he didn’t go over the speed limit or get another ticket.
Helen flipped through the messages on her phone. There was a text from Lily describing the anger of their parents. One from her grandparents asking her about her well being. A text from Tommy and Johnny, the twins, they wanted a few souvenirs. The last message was a voicemail from her mom, which she promptly erased.
Helen sighed and played a bit with her phone when someone took a seat next to her.
“Hey.”
“Hello.” Helen didn’t look up.
“Are you waiting on someone?”
“Yes.”
“Want to wait together?”
“No, I don’t think my boyfriend would appreciate that.”
“Are you sure?”
Helen turned towards him and spat out, “Yes, I am.”
The guy glared and jumped off the seat. “Fine, you don’t look that good anyway you black bitch.”
Helen opened her mouth to respond when Nate’s fist connected with the guy’s jaw. Helen blinked in surprise. She didn’t even see Nate come out the bathroom.
Nate reached down and grabbed the guy’s shirt. “If you ever say that again I will do more than punch you. Now apologize!”
“S-Sorry,” The guy winced when Nate dropped him.
Helen nodded and placed her phone in her pocket. Nate walked over to the counter and placed a fifty on the surface. “Keep it.”
The stunned waitress nodded and opened her mouth to respond, but they were on the way to Nate’s car.
“Next time, let’s get Burger King and eat in the car.” Helen said.
“Agreed.” Nate nodded as he drove away.
Helen huffed in her seat. At least they didn’t give us funny looks this time. She sometimes wondered how advance the world truly claimed to be.
13. Frost
“Helen.”
“…”
“Helen.”
“…”
“I’m sorry. I don’t think RPGs or Simulation games are a waste of time. Now will you please talk to me? It’s weird when you don’t.”
Helen turned to him with a smile. “Told you.”
Nate chuckled as he crossed the Ohio border. It’s good to know her taste in games hasn’t changed.
3. Distant Nature
“It’s so windy out there.” Helen watched as the wind rocked the trees outside their hotel room.
“It is. Good thing we found this place on the way.” Nate wrapped his arms around her waist.
“I like it. How did you find it?”
“A few of Brandon’s relatives own this hotel, so he told me about it. I’m going to have to give them a good review.”
“Me too. How is Brandon?”
“He’s fine. He’s talking about looking for a place with Jakey. Those two are so sweet it gives me cavities at times.”
“Don’t they say that about us?” Helen grinned.
Nate scoffed and shook his head. “We’re different. We don’t make out a lot like they do.”
“Hmm, I think we’re overdue for that.”
“We are.” Nate pulled Helen close and laid a soft kiss on her lips. Helen wrapped her arms around his neck and deepened the kiss.
They spent the night catching up.
12. High Tide
Helen stared at the ceiling in one of the favorite hotels in Chicago. She closed her eyes at the thunder outside their window. She hoped it would stop her thoughts, but it didn’t. Helen couldn’t stop thinking about her family, her future, her career, and her relationship. It took a lot for them to build up what they have. What if it fell apart when she left? Should she end it now and save them the trouble?
“Nate.” Helen said softly.
“Hmm? What’s wrong?” Nate mumbled sleepily as he nuzzled her cheek.
Helen settled against his chest. She started tracing the Kanji tattoo for dreams on his right bicep. “I’m worried about us. Will we be okay? I’ll be over in France for a while and I don’t want to lose what we have, but I don’t want to ask you to come with me. I know you have things you need to do here and classes to finish, but I can’t help worrying.”
Nate hugged her and pressed a kiss on her forehead. “Amour, we’ll be fine. We survived so many things thrown our way, your mother, my aunt, a few of our now ex-friends and school. We’ll see this through together.” He brought her hand up to his lips. “We’ll be fine. I know we will.”
Helen couldn’t help, but smile at the sure tone in his voice. She snuggled against his chest with a contented sigh. “Yeah we will.”
Nate squeezed her hand as Helen squeezed back.
She wouldn’t let what they have disappear without a fight.
2. Heat Wave
Helen barely walked through the door of her condominium in Chicago when Nate pushed her against it, capturing her lips in a heated kiss. Helen wrapped her arms around Nate’s neck with a soft moan. She ground against him and slid her fingers in his hair. Nate gripped her hips and pushed back against her.
“Want you so much.” Nate breathed as he kissed down her neck.
“Me too. Bedroom…now…” Helen moaned and tugged his hair.
“Yes.” Nate pulled away from the door and linked their fingers together on their way upstairs.
She was surprised at his self-control with the way she teased him during the ride. Helen enjoyed watching Nate trying to keep his eyes on the road as she finished her ice cream. She knew he wouldn’t last long, which is what she wanted. It was a while since they were together and Helen wanted to capture all the time she could.
Nate pushed the door open and walked over to the bed. Helen pushed him down on the bed and straddled his waist.
“Want to spend the day in bed? We can order in.” Helen rubbed his chest.
“I like the sound of that.” Nate slipped his hands under her shirt to cup her breasts. Helen pushed her chest in his hands as she grinded against him. Nate gripped her behind and pushed back against him. Helen moaned as she pulled off her shirt. Nate groaned and pulled her down for a heated kiss. Helen gripped his shoulders as she returned the kiss.
She liked that idea too.
1. Cold Snap
Helen tried to ignore her phone. After her night with Nate, she didn’t feel like moving. After the third time she couldn’t ignore anymore. She felt around on the night table for her cell phone and picked it up without looking at the caller id.
“Hello?”
“So you can answer the phone.”
Helen closed her eyes at the cool voice at the other end of the line. “Hi mom.”
“Where are you?”
“I’m in the States.”
“Helen.”
“I’m in my condo.”
“Which one?”
“The one in Chicago.”
“With who?
“Nate.”
“…So you’re going to elope now?”
“No. I want a big wedding so everyone can see that I’m marrying a white boy.”
“Helen, we still need to discuss your France trip. Are you sure you want to spend so much money on a hobby?”
Helen pushed back the comment on her tongue. “Listen mom, I’m sorry, but I have to go. I’ll check in soon, I promise.”
“Helen, I--”
“Good bye mom. I love you.” Helen hit the end button with a weary sigh.
“Your mom?” Nate sat up and rested his chin on her shoulder.
“Yeah.” Helen nodded.
“How pissed is she?”
“Very.”
“Well, you told her you were in Chicago. She knows you only have one here, right?”
“She does. It was a present from my grandparents, but I don’t think she remembers. She probably got mine mixed up with Lily’s. I ended the conversation before she started on her favorite rant on my hobby.” Helen sighed again.
“That one again? She didn’t see the invitation you received. Aren’t you one of ten students who got picked out of your whole class?”
“I am, but she still doesn’t like it.”
“I’m sure she’ll calm down once she sees how successful you are. People eating are one of those things that will never change like taxes.”
“Yeah that’s true.” Helen giggled.
Nate smiled and kissed her cheek. “Are you going to call her back?”
“Yeah, after breakfast. Do you think she’ll listen?”
“I hope she will.” Helen leaned against him.
“I do too.” Nate rubbed her back.
Helen nodded and closed her eyes. She hoped her mom wouldn’t go through reason on why being a chef was a waste again.
5. Dry Spell
Helen hated that lovely time of month. She was hungry all the time. Her resistance against stupidity and bullshit was lower and her temper was shorter. She wanted to take some of the edge off, but she didn’t like having sex during that time. Helen tried it one time and it was the last time. She was glad Nate understood, but she still wanted to get off.
“Nate,”
“Yeah,”
“How far are we from the next stop?”
“A few miles. Why?”
“I was wondering if we could have some fun when we get to the next hotel.”
“I thought your monthly was happening.”
“It is, but that doesn’t stop my mouth or your hands.”
“Have I told you how much I love when you’re aggressive?” Nate grinned as he turned onto the freeway.
“Yes, but I love to hear it.” Helen smiled.
Her monthly did have it’s perks.
11. Eclipse
“That was fast.” Helen sat up as Nate walked in the room with food.
“The Chinese place was quick.” Nate walked over to the table and placed the bags down. “I’m wondering though if we should find a place with a kitchen. You know, so you can practice.”
“I’ll be practicing enough when I get over there. This is my time to relax. You just want my cupcakes again.” Helen grinned and walked over to the table.
“Maybe, I miss your lasagna too and that casserole you make. That is so good.” Nate pulled out his egg rolls.
“You better not let your mom hear that. She’ll get me.” Helen grinned as she took the chopsticks out.
“She won’t, she’ll be happy that her boy is fed.” Nate pulled the cups out and set them down. “I’m going to miss it.”
Helen felt a lump in her throat as she walked over to him. She wrapped her arms around Nate’s neck and kissed his cheek. “I’m going to miss that too.”
Nate leaned against her and rubbed her arm. Helen nuzzled his cheek.
She was going to miss a lot of things.
7. Eye of the storm
Helen sighed as she read the sign that they were leaving Nebraska. It felt as if everything was coming so fast and she couldn’t stop it. Lily was going to be in her first year of college, the twins were going into their third year, and her grandparents were changing the management of their business. Diane had her own department in PR, Sabrina had her own classroom, Jessica wasn’t a resident anymore, Mari had a new business, and Regina passed the bar. Everyone in Helen’s life was taking the next step in their life. It was her turn and the thought terrified her.
Helen looked over when Nate rubbed her hand. “Thinking about the future,”
“Yeah. Everything is moving so fast. I wonder if I’ll be able to keep up.” Helen rubbed back.
“You will. I know it’ll be hard at first, but you will.”
“Aren’t you afraid?”
“Yeah, every day I’m afraid. I have to start putting my architect skills to use, find a job, find a reasonable place to stay, make sure my parents are okay, fight my aunt, and a whole list of things I have to do. I’m afraid, but I know I can do it because I won’t be alone. Neither will you, you know we have your back. We always will.” Nate kissed the back of her hand.
“Thanks. I know you’re probably tired of hearing me cry about the future.” Helen smiled sheepishly.
“Far from it. You can complain and cry to me all you want. These rants have nothing on the ones you used to have during high school.” Nate grinned.
“That’s because I was an angry teenager.”
“Weren’t we all?”
Helen laughed.
9. Thin Ice
“Nate,”
“…”
“Nate,”
“…”
“I’m sorry, I snapped at you. I didn’t mean what I said. Will you please talk to me?” Helen rested her hand against the bathroom door. When she didn’t hear anything she took a seat on the bed. Helen had another argument with her mom and took out her frustration on Nate. It wasn’t right, but he was the nearest target.
I guess I can always fly to California by myself. Helen sighed and bit her lip.
She looked up when the door opened and Nate walked over to her.
“So, you don’t believe that my games or drawings are silly.”
“No, I don’t.”
“You broke my Call of Duty.”
“I got you a new one and remember our agreement to always have a back up of our games in case of the red ring of death.”
“Yeah.”
“I never stopped.”
Nate smiled and took a seat next to her. He wrapped his arms around her waist. “You know I don’t care about the game, right?”
Helen nodded as she buried her face against his chest. “I know. I’m sorry.”
“It’s alright.”
“I love you.”
“I love you too.”
4. Storm Front
“Here we are! Vegas!” Nate announced as he pushed opened the door to their penthouse suite in the Bellagio.
“We were in Vegas twenty minutes ago.” Helen giggled as she walked around the room.
“I know, but I always wanted to say that.” Nate grinned as he shut the door behind him.
Helen smiled and placed her bags down. They made good time and made it to Nevada with days to spare. It wouldn’t take too long to be in California and meet up with Marcus. They had a choice between staying in a motel or going to one of the famed hotels on the strip. They decided on the hotel. It would be the first time they have a room of their own and wouldn’t have to share with their siblings. Something they did countless times during family trips to Nevada.
Helen walked around the room as she put her hair up. “I love Vegas, but I hate how hot it is.”
“It’ll cool down soon.” Nate chuckled and took a seat on the bed.
“What should we do?” Helen asked as she took a seat next to him.
“We can go out or we can eat or whatever you want.” Nate blew a strand away from his face.
“I know what I want to do.” Helen kissed his cheek and moved out of his arms.
“Oh? What is that?” Nate said as he watched Helen walk over to their bags.
“I want to take a bath first, then, we can go get something to eat and catch a show.” Helen bent down to grab her bag and walked over to the bathroom. She smiled over her shoulder. “Care to join me?”
“Is that even a question?” Nate grinned as he got off the bed. He walked over and wrapped his arms around her waist. Helen leaned up to close the gap between the when something rumbled between them. She groaned and pulled her phone out of her pocket.
“It’s Diane. Should I answer?”
“Yeah. I’m sure she’s worried that I took you to Vegas to elope without her as a witness.” Nate chuckled.
“Yeah.” Helen giggled and answered her phone. “Hey Di. No I didn’t run away to get married and if I did you would be the first one to know.” She laughed and walked over to the bed.
Nate chuckled and turned to his bag to look for his 3DS. He could check on his Sims or take out a few zombies. He played his game while Helen caught up with Diane.
It felt like home.
15. Force of nature
Helen and Nate made it to California without much trouble. They contacted Marcus and agreed to meet him at his apartment in Santa Monica. Helen couldn’t wait to eat at one of the restaurants. She excitedly named off all of her favorite places and new ones she wanted to visit. Nate named a few places he wanted to visit along with some time at the beach.
They found Marcus’ apartment and knocked on the door.
“Helen! Nate! I’m so glad you guys could make it!” Marcus exclaimed as he pulled them inside.
“Hey man, it’s great to see you. Thanks for the invitation!” Nate clapped his shoulder before Marcus hugged them.
“You’re welcome! I wanted you guys to be able to see the movie I’m in. It’s my first big role and I’m really excited.” Marcus grinned.
“You should be! I know it’s going to be great.” Helen smiled as she hugged him.
“Thank you.” Marcus pulled back and ushered them into the living room. “How are you two? Did you guys elope?”
“No, not yet, we’ll tell you when we do.” Nate said as he took a seat.
“We’re going to make it a big Facebook event.” Helen giggled and sat next to Nate.
“I can’t wait to get the notification.” Marcus chuckled as he sat back. “What have you two been up to?”
“We drove here and checked out the many sights of America. It’s been pretty fun to just pick up and go.” Nate said.
“You guys drove here? Tell me, did your moms faint when they heard about it.” Marcus said.
“Mine almost did, but she recovered pretty quickly.” Nate chuckled.
“I talked her down, but I’m sure she’s going to bring it up when I go home. I’m pretty okay with that.” Helen giggled.
“Oh yes, it’s good to see your mom hasn’t changed.” Marcus smiled.
“Nope, she hasn’t. The only downside is the humidity. I decided just to go natural with my hair. I didn’t feel like washing it over and over again.” Helen touched the end of her ponytail. “Although, it’s a bit poofy at the end.”
“I like it, it’s really cute.”
Helen and Nate turned to the voice in the doorway. Marcus grinned at the young man with black hair and hazel eyes. He waved as he walked in and took a seat next to Marcus.
“Looks like I’m not the only one who was up to something.” Nate smirked as Helen giggled.
Marcus rubbed the back of his neck with a sheepish smile. “Yeah, I met him on the set. Ciel, these are my friends Nate and Helen. Guys, meet Ciel. I know, I know I met a guy in California, but I’m pretty happy.”
“If you weren’t I don’t think I was doing my job properly.” Ciel laughed and turned to Nate and Helen. “It’s nice to meet you guys. Marcus has told me so much about you. I know you’re the chef and he’s the architect. He can design your restaurant. That was smart.”
“It was a good decision.” Helen nodded.
“Just a list in a long ways she’ll use me in the future.” Nate grinned playfully.
“Why of course, is there any other reason?” Helen smiled.
“Oh I’m hurt.” Nate pouted.
“Yeah right!” Helen laughed and poked his side.
“You’re right, these two are good for each other.” Ciel whispered.
“Told you.” Marcus whispered back.
“We heard that!” Nate and Helen said.
Ciel and Marcus laughed and settled against the cushions.
“We have some time to kill before the movie festival. There are many things you have to see before then and I’m sure we can fit some time in for the beach.” Ciel said.
“As long as we can hit some of the restaurants I want to see, then I’m game.” Helen said.
“We have a plan!” Ciel grinned.
“So, how are things back home?” Marcus asked.
Helen and Nate updated Marcus about the things happening among their friends and family. Helen had to admit it was good to see Nate and Marcus hanging out with each other again. While they caught up, Helen got to know Ciel. She found they had many things in common, including their taste in food. She looked forward to the rest of their visit.
8. On the horizon
After they settled in at Marcus’ apartment, they spent the rest of the week spending time with each other. Ciel and Marcus took Helen and Nate to their favorite places. Helen enjoyed Alexandria Café and Café Crepe. Nate liked Chinese Gorumet Express and Bergamot Café. Marcus took them to the beach where Helen and Marcus caught up while Nate and Ciel swam.
After their trip to the beach, the next event was the Film Festival. They piled into Marcus’ car and traveled to downtown Los Angeles. Helen never saw so many different films in one place. She caught a few movies, both regional and international, before joining the guys for Marcus’ film.
They watched Marcus’ role as a lawyer who was slowly turning corrupt. Marcus warned them that the role wasn’t original, but he had a lot fun. Helen and Nate didn’t mind. It was amazing to see their friend on screen. After Marcus’ movie, they watched Ciel’s where he played a coming of age teenager set in 1930s Chicago. Ciel hoped the facts were accurate, but Helen and Nate reassured him it was fine. It was excited to know two people in the festival.
After the festival, the days leading to Helen’s trip grew closer. Helen spent much of her time hanging out with Nate, Marcus, and Ciel. Diane flew out to join them and have a girls’ day with Helen. She took many pictures of their day at the spa. Helen loved all the things she bought too. It was Diane’s idea since she was going to a new place to have a new wardrobe.
Helen could care less about the clothes. She was happy that Diane flew out to see her and have one more day together before she left. Helen and Nate had a big dinner on their last day in California. She would miss them, but made a note to keep in touch more often. Once their time in California ended, she flew home to hang out with her siblings.
Helen watched Tommy’s soccer game and Johnny’s tennis match. She spent a day with Lily and helped her shop for her dorm and other college essentials. Helen helped Lily calm down and separated the truths and myths over the first year. She warned her about not falling for certain traps. Helen hoped Lily listened she didn’t want to see her with someone who wouldn’t treat her correctly.
Helen had dinner with her family and told them about her time traveling the country. She showed her pictures and described the movies. Lilly and the boys enjoyed the photos and the movies she saw. She heard the argument about her trip from her parents again, but she didn’t back down. Helen pointed out the positives of the trip as well as the negatives. She explained that it would help her in the future and it was something she wanted to do.
Her dad let up on his argument. He didn’t approve of Helen going cross country with Nate, but was happy he didn’t let anything happen to her. Her mom still has reservations about the trip, but let up after Helen’s grandparents agreed that the trip would be good for Helen. Her mom grudgingly accepted it, on the condition that Helen called at least once every day.
That was something Helen could do. It wasn’t a big victory with her parents, but her grandparents supported her. That was a big enough step.
Carla, Nate’s sister, surprised Helen during her last week. They spent time watching old movies together and catching up with each other, since Carla felt that Helen was practically her sister-in-law. That never failed to make her smile.
Afterwards, Helen went to dinner with Nate’s family. His parents insisted and it was always hard for her to say no to them. The amount of gifts and well wishes surprised her, but she loved it.
Helen spent her last weekend with Nate. They played video games, watched their favorite movies, and learned their bodies over again. When they weren’t in bed or playing a campaign they talked about their relationship.
Helen didn’t want to break up with Nate. She knew it sounded selfish, but she didn’t want to lose his love or friendship. Nate assured her it wouldn’t. During their talk, they agreed to slow things down, until she returned. She felt it was a good compromise. They could focus on their careers and it left it open for anything to happen. It didn’t stop them from spending one last night together.
On the day of her flight, Helen woke up earlier than her alarm clock. She slipped out of Nate’s arms and walked over to the window. She sighed as she noticed the clear blue sky. It was wonderful day for a flight, but it did nothing to calm her nerves. Nate helped her pack and load her things in his car. He offered to drive her to the airport and she accepted it. She didn’t think she could drive without tearing up.
They made small talk on their way and flipped through different songs on Helen’s ipod. She swallowed when they turned up into JFK International Airport.
“We really had a lot of fun didn’t we?” Nate said as he parked.
“Yeah, we did. I’m glad I took a lot of pictures.” Helen said.
“Me too,” Nate reached over and took her hand. Helen nodded and linked their fingers together.
“I’ll make sure to visit and you know France is Carla’s second home. When you come back, you’ll be able to go to the second stage. You’ll be able to work in a restaurant and I know you want to do that.”
“Yeah, I do.”
“Then cheer up. You’ll be fine.” Nate squeezed her hand.
Helen leaned over and buried her face against his shoulder. “I didn’t think the day would get here so fast.” She mumbled.
“I know, me either, but that means the time in France will pass just as fast too. You’ll be back here and we’ll go out to your favorite restaurant where you can tell me about all your adventures.” Nate rubbed her back as Helen nodded.
“Alright. I’ll miss you.” Helen whispered.
“I’ll miss you too.” Nate whispered back.
Helen looked up and placed a soft kiss on his lips. Nate closed his eyes and tightened his hold around his waist. Helen moved to slide her fingers through his hair when Feedback by Janet Jackson started to play. She pulled back and pulled out her phone.
“I set an alarm so I wouldn’t be late for my flight.” Helen cut it off and put her phone away.
“Yeah, it wouldn’t be good to be late.” Nate said.
Helen nodded as they got out the car. Nate helped with her bags and did a final check with her.
They held hands on their walk to the entrance.
“Be good and I’ll call you as soon as I’m in France.” Helen adjusted her bag.
“Okay, my phone will be on.” Nate nodded.
“Okay. Good bye Nate, I had a lot of fun.”
“Me too. Let’s do it again soon.”
Helen smiled and kissed him again. Nate cupped her cheek and returned it. They slowly pulled away with a smile.
“Bye.”
“Bye.”
Helen waved as she gripped her bag and walked inside. Nate watched her until she disappeared into the crowd. He swallowed the lump in his throat on the way to his car.
We’ll be fine. I know it.
In the airport, Helen took a breath to stop her shaky hands.
We’re going to be fine. I know we will.
The future was scary, but they could see it through.
