Dear Christiaan,
It pains me to write this to you instead of telling you in person. But I am a coward and I cannot say this to your face. The news will break in the court soon and I’m sure you’ve been seeing how the King favors me.
His Majesty has asked me to become his official mistress and I have accepted. I’m sure you know that as the King’s mistress I am only allowed to be available to him. Our relationship cannot continue. We can still be friends, but the other intimacies that we shared are no more.
But you must understand that I do have great feelings for you. It’s just that I’ve also developed feelings for His Majesty and even if I hadn’t, I feel it is my duty to my country to accept him. Relations between Monde and Iberte are fragile at best and even though the Queen is Mondian as am I, I might be able to persuade His Majesty towards Mondian interests.
You must promise that you will take care of Christine. I haven’t forgotten about her, but no one must know about her. So I leave her well-being up to you, Christiaan. You’ll be a much better influence on her that I ever could be.
