“I’ll have his head!” Henri yelled throwing the pamphlet away from him.
The Councilors looked at each other worried. Jean Michele Everart sighed in his seat.
“What is the matter, Your Majesty?” One of the councilors dared ask.
Henri looked up murderous. He pointed at the fallen pamphlet.
“He dare criticize me?”
“Who criticized you, Your Majesty?” Pierre Everart ventured to ask.
“That lunatic Cèsaire Belrose,” Henri grunted out.
Jean Luc Everart entered the room at that moment. The other councilors looked up him.
“What did I miss?” Jean Luc asked.
Henri stood up. He came up to Jean Luc and put his hands on his shoulders.
“I want you to find Cèsaire Belrose and bring him into the state custody.”
“What has he done this time?” Jean Luc asked somewhat exasperated.
“He dared to criticize me in that treatise The Rights of Kings. He plays with the wrong monarch,” Henri growled.
“Belrose is well loved among some of the people. It would look bad arresting him, Your Majesty,” Jean Luc said.
Henri looked at him incredulously. “He criticized me for daring to put aside Therese for your sister. This is the same man that criticized my father for betrothing me to an Ibonian Infanta!”
Jean Luc laughed but quickly shut up when he saw the look on the King’s face.
“I will have Belrose arrested, but I urge you not to have him executed. It will not look good if you have him executed before you marry my sister. They will say your marriage was built on his blood.”
Henri scoffed. “I don’t care what they say. God has smiled on our union. It will soon be cemented in the eyes of the Church. The people will love her as I love her.”
Jean Luc let out a small sigh. “Maybe so, but have peace. Belrose is just trying to start trouble. I doubt anyone puts any store in the malarkey he writes.”
Henri eyed Jean Luc warily. “If you think it is wise, I will only have him arrested.”
He turned to the rest of the councilors. “Do you all agree with Verste?”
Some of the men were quiet. Jean Michele spoke up.
“Yes, Your Majesty, we agree.”
Henri nodded. He sat back down at the head of the table.
“On to the next piece of business then,” Henri said sighing.
The other men leaned in and picked up their papers. For now Belrose had a reprieve, but everyone knew he was on thin ice.
