Word Count: 450
Story: Misfits
Summary: Vincent hangs out while Hobbie reorders his library.
Notes: I don’t know why teenage Vincent is interacting with Hobbie who is a friend of his mother’s. I just wanted to write it. My life has been extremely busy lately and I have been blocked, so I apologize if this is bad. I’m mostly really glad that I wrote something, no matter how strange.

“So, the song says that God comes along and tells Pegasus to take all the hurt in the world and make it go away. At first I kept thinking about how a winged horse would even be able to do that but if you think about it hard enough, you’ll realize that the real question is why would Pegasus take commands from God. You see, that makes no sense at all. If it was Zeus, then I would buy it, but why would a winged horse from Greek mythology take orders from God?”

Vincent, who had been speaking very fast, took a deep breath and looked at Hobbie, who had his back turned to him, expectantly.

“You know you’re a weird kid, right?” Hobbie asked without turning around, still reordering his bookshelves.

“Yeah, sure. People tell me that all the time.”

“Good,” Hobbie nodded as he walked over to the table Vincent was sitting at to pick up a few more books. “The truth keeps you grounded.”

“Not that you should judge ‘cause you don’t seem all that normal yourself.” He picked one of the books from one of the piles and started to leaf through it. “You know, an old man who rooms with the town’s crazy cowboy. To be honest, I always wondered if he had a home.”

“Middle-aged,” Hobbie muttered as he sorted books standing next to Vincent.

“Huh?”

“I’m middle-aged, not old. I think actually that’s what I’ve always been.”

“Yeah, ‘cause nobody who’s ever been young would read Truth, Torture and the American Way,” Vincent agreed. “What is that even about?

“I also have Confessions of an Economic Hit Man,” Hobbie offered, holding the book up. “That’s probably a little more current.”

Vincent looked up just to make sure that the cover really said what Hobbie had just said because that sounded even more ludicrous than Ancient Discoveries: Ancient Torture Tech. “You have all these books about torture and conspiracies that a psychologist would probably not have anything nice to say about and you think I’m weird?”

Hobbie didn’t answer and Vincent watched as he continued to sort through books and finally threw one in the trash can.

Vincent reached over and fished out The Illustrated Encyclopedia of How We Die. “Seriously, I didn’t even know such a thing existed.”

“You’d better forget it does. It’s full of little errors. Keep it if you want to.”

Vincent, who was looking through the book that seemed far more interesting than Hobbie gave it credit for looked sceptical. “And risk the other kids making fun of me for being weird?”

Hobbie waved him off. “Oh, you’ll get that anyway, whether you read that book or not.”

“Thanks.”
