“It’s my birthday, yes it is. I am seventeen and I am ready to live!” Princess Louise sang.

Her mother, Princess Matilide smiled indulgently at her daughter. Her twin sister, Victorie rolled her eyes and smirked at their cousin, Princess Marie. Marie shook her head.

“Papa, what are you going to get me for my birthday?” Louise said from her seat. She leaned towards her father, Prince Andre.

Andre smiled at his daughter. “You’ll see pumpkin.”

“Have you also forgotten that it is my birthday as well, Louise?” Victorie said.

Louise paused and looked at her sister, and then she smiled. “Of course not sweet sister, I will get the best present money can buy for you.”

“I don’t want that. All I want is art supplies.”

Louise made a face. “You and Bessi astound me. Painting is such a masculine thing to do.”

“I beg your pardon. Grandmother Lisbeth paints!”

“That is true, Louise. Your grandmother is a great painter. She learned from the foremost masters in Segra,” Andre added.

“Humph. Things were different when grandmother was growing up. I think only men should paint. They should paint their muses. Wouldn’t you rather be a muse, Tori?” Louise said making baby eyes at her sister.

Victorie scoffed. “Never!”

The carriage was quiet for a little while more as they passed through downtown Morelessa.
People on the street noticed the carriage and stopped to point.

“Look at our adoring public!” Louise said preening in the window.

The carriage rolled to a stop.

“Finally!” Victorie said not waiting for the footman to open the door. She barreled through the door and almost knocked over the poor man.

“Victorie, your governess taught you better manners than that!” Andre said reprimanding his daughter.

Victorie looked guiltily at her father. “Sorry Papa, I am just excited to see the city and it is my birthday after all.”

Andre tried to stay stern, but a small smile crossed his face.

The other women descended the steps of the carriage.

Andre held out his arm for his wife, who took it and smiled loving up at him.

“Where shall we go first?”

“The dressmaker’s!” Louise shouted.

Victorie rolled her eyes. “I want my supplies.”

“You can wait, Tori. After all I am the eldest,” Louise said sneering at her sister.

“Only by five minutes!” Victorie said sticking out her tongue. Louise pinched her sister’s arm which resulted in a whack on her shins.

“Mama, did you see this untamed beast kick me?”

“Oh you are going to pay for that!” Victorie said grabbing her sister’s dark blonde hair.

“Girls! Really? You are adults now. Act like it!” Their father shouted.

Victorie let go of her sister and stepped back. “Sorry father. We can go to the dressmaker’s if Louise wants.”

Andre smiled. “That is very nice of you, Victorie.”

Victorie grinned and started out towards the Madame’s shop. Marie and Louise walked behind her.

“So what kind of gown are you going to order?” Marie asked reluctantly.

“I’m going to order an ocean blue gown to match my eyes of course!” Louise said.

Marie smiled. “That sounds nice. Maybe Victorie could paint your portrait?”

“That would be grand. It could be sent to an Adeodatian royal as my betrothal picture. Yes that would be perfect,” Louise said dreamily.

Marie frowned slightly. Her cousin was already thinking about marriage and she had just turned seventeen? Marie was one year older and she dread the day when her father would start sending out for proposals to the many royals of the Adeodatian continent. But she wouldn’t rain on her cousin’s parade. Louise was a pretty girl and she knew that would soon want a family of her own.

“Here we are!” Victorie said. She nodded at the guard and went inside. The rest of the family followed her.
