Notes: The Everarts are the family of Henri I's second queen, Anna.
“I bet you thirty livres, the babe is another girl,” Pierre Everart saiding laying down a pile of silver coins.
His elder brother, Jean Luc, shook his head. “Pierre we shouldn’t play games like this. But I will take your dare and bet you fifty livres that the babe is a boy,” he said laying down his coins. “But for her sake the babe had better be a boy.”
Pierre laughed and gulped down his ale. Their father, Jean Michele came into the room with his elder granddaughter, Princess Elisabeth in his arms.
“She called him me Gramps!” Jean Michele said to his sons. “Say it for them, Betha!”
Elisabeth grabbed her grandfather’s ear and pulled making the old man laugh. He kissed her pudgy cheek and walked over to the window with her.
“Father seems too…jolly. Do you think so?” Pierre whispered to Jean Luc.
“Yes indeed. I thought he’d be more disappointed that Anna has given birth to only daughters.”
“Maybe he’s just a dotting grandfather?” Pierre added.
Jean Luc raised his eyebrows at his brother. They both burst out laughing making their father turn to them.
“Boys is there a problem?” Jean Michele asked.
The two men shook their heads.
“So how’s that hot piece of ass, brother? What’s her name, Adelaide?” Pierre asked.
“Her name is Agnes and she’s fine,” Jean Luc said suddenly quiet.
“Have you got a babe on her yet?”
Jean Luc chuckled. “If I hadn’t, I soon will. I’m insatiable for her.”
“What does Charlotte think of you bedding one of her servants?”
Jean Luc looked away. “Charlotte doesn’t care. I think she’s grateful to the girl so I won’t have to come to her bed.”
“But you’ve got two sons by Lady Charlotte. So she must have total repugnance to share your bed.”
“She just lies there. I try to entice her, but she just stares at the ceiling.”
“Strange,” Pierre said.
The door to the room opened again and their sister, Marie, came in along with her four eldest children.
Jean Luc frowned at his sister. “Marie, you shouldn’t have brought all of them with you.”
Marie smiled prettily at her brother. “I didn’t brother, the two youngest are at home. They wanted to see their aunt and new nephew.”
Celstin sat down at the table with his uncles. He reached for the pitcher of ale, but Pierre stopped him.
“No alcohol for you, Celstin.”
“Oh come on uncle. Mother lets me have some with dinner if I act well.”
“You won’t drink in front of me while you’re underage. I’ll call for some raspberry juice.”
Celstin sighed and picked up the playing cards.
Marie went over to her father. She smiled at little Elisabeth and pinched her cheek.
“She looks just like Anna. Except for the hair, that is,” Marie said taking the girl from her father’s lap.
“Indeed, she had those grey eyes that her mother inherited from Elisabetta.”
Marie pouted while little Elisabeth played with the string of pearls at her neck. “I always wished I had inherited mother’s eyes.”
“You shouldn’t. You have my eyes, doesn’t that please you?”
“Yes Father,” Marie said rolling her eyes slightly.
They heard a scream from behind the door. For a few minutes things were quiet, but then they heard a cry.
The door opened and Elisabetta stepped out of the birthing room. She smiled at all of them.
“Well what is it?” Jean Luc said coming up to his mother.
“Welcome to the world, the new Prince of Norme!” Elisabetta shouted.
The room erupted in cheers.
Jean Michele went over to his wife and planted a kiss on her lips before going into the room to see his new grandson.
Marie held onto little Elisabeth who was babbling excitedly. Jean Luc looked at his younger brother. “So you owe me thirty livres.”
Pierre laughed. He turned and smacked Celstin from sneaking the ale. But he smiled at the boy.
“It’s a joyous day, so why not? Have some nephew and then go and tell the King’s man that the Queen has delivered of a son.”
“Alright!” Celstin said downing the rest of the ale and jumping up from the table.
The day was truly a happy day for the Everart family and for the foreseeable future, nothing could touch them.
