“Have you heard the latest?” Adeline d’Albert whispered to her Ibonian friend, Felipa Nunez.
“Ooh what?” Felipa said coming closer.
“I hear that the Queen is with child!” Adeline said excitedly.
“But the Queen is about to be 41 and I thought…” Felipa trailed off.
Adeline nodded. “Apparently the King shared her bed.”
“Or maybe the Queen has been naughty?” Felipa said giggling into her hand. Adeline raised her eyebrow, but she burst into laughter as well.
“How could you say that about your fellow countrywoman? The Queen would never.”
Felipa choked back tears. She wiped her eyes before she spoke again.
“Oh I know, but who would have thought that the King would have ever lie with the Queen. I thought he was in love with that little Anna snot.”
Adeline shrugged. “Stranger things have been known to happen and beside I hear the Everart girl is refusing to take him into her bed.”
“Well I know you’re not talking about the elder sister because we all know she spreads her legs for anyone.”
Adeline smacked Felipa’s right arm, but didn’t disagree. The two women were quiet for a few moments before Adeline spoke again.
“If the Queen should deliver the long for prince, her position will be untouchable.”
Felipa nodded. “I wonder what that means for the Everart girl?”
Elsewhere in the Spring Palace
Henri knocked on the door quietly. No one answered. He started to leave, but he had a gift for her.
He opened the door and before he knew he saw something flying at him. His instincts told him to duck and he did. He turned and looked behind and saw a tiny figurine of Saint Elisheva broken on the floor. Henri turned toward the direction the figurine had come from and spotted the suspect.
Anna was standing in the corner of the room with her hands on her hips. Her face was splotchy red and she was huffing.
“Anna what?” He started.
She walked up to him and started hitting his chest.
“My love?” Henri asked trying to block the hits.
“You dare call me love? When you’ve betrayed me so?” Anna shouted at him.
Henri grabbed her arms and pulled her to him. She struggled in his arms, but he wouldn’t let go.
“What have I done to upset you, sweetheart?”
Anna stared at him incredulously. “The Queen is pregnant.”
Henri let go of her before turning away. Anna stared at his back.
“How is it that the Queen is pregnant when you haven’t shared her bed?” Anna asked.
Henri didn’t say anything.
“I thought you promised to never share her bed again.”
Henri turned to her. He cupped her chin in his hands.
“You promised to marry me, Henri du Bois,” she whispered.
Henri kissed her lips and pulled her to him. She didn’t fight this time.
“It was one night of passion, my love. You had turned away from me that night and Therese was my comfort.”
Anna jerked out of his arms. “You don’t have any restraint, do you?”
An angry look crossed into Henri’s eyes. Anyone else would have backed off, but Anna Everart was never one to back down.
“I am King and Therese is my Queen. It is my duty to get a son on her!”
“Oh please you weren’t thinking about a son. You were thinking with your cock!” She shot back.
Henri growled. “It’s a strange day when the mistress reprimands a man for sleeping with his own wife!”
Anna took a step backward. She turned her head from him.
“I think you should leave, Your Majesty,” she said quietly.
Henri sighed and stepped toward her. “Anna.”
She looked at him then and he saw that her usually lively grey eyes looked cold.
“I will report to Her Majesty’s service tomorrow. Now if it please you, sieur. Please leave me.”
Henri took a step back. He stared at her, but she had her head down.
“I will let you calm down and we will talk tomorrow,” he said opening the door to leave.
He waited for just a moment to see if she would speak, but the room was still. He ran his hand through his blond hair and left the room.
After he left, Anna sat on the bed. She put her face in her hands and started to cry.
I thought he loved me. I truly believe he did. She thought to herself. She fell back onto the bed and lay there staring at the ceiling. What would she do now? The thought of going back to Therese’s service sickened her, but she supposed she had no choice. This left her cold and Anna had always hated the cold.
