Word Count: 575
Story: Misfits
Summary: Hobbie dispenses relationship advice.
Notes: There’s a reason Kev and Lara’s first relationship doesn’t work out. Actually, there are more reasons but I think this one should be enough all by itself. Also, I think this got weirder than it was supposed to be.

“Is it just me or is it soothingly calm around here when Wes is gone?” Hobbie asked, dangling his feet in the pool.

“It feels like an almost completely different place,” Lara agreed. “We should do this more often.”

“Send him away, you mean?” Hobbie reached for the joint she handed to him.

“Maybe even locking him in a closet or something might work. I’m really not picky about how we get rid of him.” She leaned back, resting her head on the stone floor that was warm because of the rising temperatures. It was still too cold for her to even think about dipping any part of her body into the pool.

“Weren’t you supposed to be going to Chicago this weekend? That way, you’d have gotten some Wes-free time anyway.”

Lara bit her lip. So far, nobody had mentioned her sudden decision not to take the trip she’d been planning for over a month now and she had hoped that it the subject just wouldn’t come up. She had obviously not put any thought into the fact that she spent most of her time with very perceptive people such as Hobbie and Shania. How much worse than Shania could Hobbie be? she asked herself and decided that maybe it wouldn’t be so bad to actually talk to him about it.

“I think Kev and I might have broken up,” she sighed. She hoped it didn’t sound too desperate.

“You guys really need to sit down and talk sometime,” he said as he passed the joint back to her.

“As if I don’t know that.” Lara rolled her eyes. “The time difference really gets in the way.”

Hobbie looked her up and down in what Lara knew was disbelief. “You do realize the time difference is just an hour, don’t you? You might want to chalk that one up to miscommunication and instead of time zones.”

She sat back up awkwardly and wrapped her arms around her knees. “I think he’s seeing someone else.”

“But you don’t know because you never talk to him?”

She nodded. “It’s not as easy as you think it is. He’s always off somewhere and --”

“And it’s really hard to pick up the phone and just call him,” Hobbie interrupted. “Yeah, I really see how that could be a problem.”

She could tell that he wanted to smack her but was trying hard to resist the urge.

“See, Lara, I’m really happy that you have finally gotten over all the angst of being a failed double agent and wondering how anyone could possibly care about you but this whole not-talking is even more ridiculous. It probably would help a great deal if you picked up the phone. It’s not like he’s stopped calling.” He inhaled the smoke deeply and held his breath while Lara watched in silence, regretting that she had decided to talk to him instead of Shania. At least Shania would have pretended to be a bit more understanding. “What’s this about him seeing someone else anyway?”

“Well, he usually moves on really quick,” Lara shrugged.

“This is the only indication you’re basing your assumption on?”

She nodded. It was a lot easier than telling Hobbie the whole story though then, he might understand that it wasn’t all her fault and Kev wasn’t being all that communicative either.

“I hope you realize that that makes your relationship only minimally more mature than Wes’ and Shirley’s, right?”
