Title: Drinking Age
Timeline: 1135 AW- Elisabeth is fifteen in this piece. Helene is 16.
Summary: Helene and Elisabeth get caught drinking.
Warning: Underage drinking!
She should have known that when Helene ran into her room and closed the door as though her life depended on it, that something was up.
“Helene?” Elisabeth asked setting down her paintbrush.
Helene turned her back to Elisabeth. She sat something down on the dresser and then turned back to Elisabeth. Her eyes were sparkling.
“Guess what I got?” Helene sang.
Elisabeth rolled her eyes and turned back to her easel. She was painting the view from her window. The sun was in the right place and it was making the statue of St. Ambroise shine in the most beautiful way.
“Don’t you want to know what I got?” Helene said coming over to stand next to Elisabeth.
“Not particularly,” Elisabeth said dipping her brush into the grey paint.
Helene clicked her tongue and then sighed.
“I found some alcohol!” She practically shouted.
Elisabeth smacked her hand over Helene’s mouth.
“You are so loud, Lenie!”
The two girls waited to see if anyone would come. When no one did, Helene shook off Elisabeth and went over to the dresser and grabbed the bottle.
“You know we’re too young for alcohol, Lenie!” Elisabeth said snatching it away from Helene.
Helene smirked at her. “I know you want to try it!”
Elisabeth hid a smile. She motioned Helene to the bed. They sat down next to each other. Elisabeth carefully pried the top off. Helene looked at her expectantly.
“Well, what are you waiting for?” She asked.
Elisabeth rolled her eyes again and took a sip.
“It tastes alright. Nothing fantastic.” Elisabeth said handing it to Helene.
Helene was about to take a sip when the door to Elisabeth’s door opened. There stood Henri, Elisabeth’s father. Her younger sisters Marguerite and Abigail stood behind him.
Henri raised an eyebrow at Elisabeth and stepped into the room. Marguerite quietly shut the door while Princess Abigail ran up to her sister.
“Betha, are you drinking?” She asked in that annoying way that children point out the obvious.
Elisabeth smiled at her sister and then looked up at her father.
“A young princess shouldn’t be drinking,” Henri said folding his arms against his chest. He looked over at Helene. “Neither should a young lady.”
Helene blushed and dropped her gaze to the carpet.
“I’m sorry, Papa. We only wanted to try it out.” Elisabeth said standing up and taking her father’s hand.
“You know the drinking age is seventeen Betha.” Henri said smiling at his daughter. “But a little never hurt anyone. But I don’t want to catch you doing it again.”
Elisabeth smiled at her father and reached up to kiss his cheek.
Henri smiled back and tapped Elisabeth on the nose. He mumbled something before opening the door and beckoning to Abigail to follow him.
“What did he say?” Helene asked finally finding her voice.
Elisabeth laughed slightly.
“He said ‘Just like your old man’,” Elisabeth said. She looked over at Marguerite who was grinning at her.
“I wonder what he meant by that?” Helene pondered.
Elisabeth didn’t say anything. She picked up her forgotten paintbrush and began to paint.
