Summary: Firebird considers what life would be like if she was normal, for just a moment. She's thirteen here.
Firebird considered the group of teenagers dominating the outdoor tables on the small patio of the restaurant. They were her age, she recognized two of the girls from her sixth grade class. All of them had their backpacks stuffed under their seats; they'd stopped by for a bite to eat after school.
She'd quit school two years ago in favor of joining the Family business full time. School had been tedious at best, but Firebird let herself wonder what it would be like if she'd stayed. She'd had friends back then, not the trusted ones but the kind that she would go out with every once in awhile. Talk about boys, gossip over the latest school drama, and just act her age for once. All the things her old classmates were doing now.
"You ready?" Paul asked, handing over a bulging envelope he'd retrieved from the restaurant owner.
Firebird spared one last look at her old classmates. In another life, perhaps.
"Let's go."
