4 That's Roul teaching health class, the last name is a nod to his original name in canon.
As if dodgeball and an impossible math test weren’t torture enough, the next period brought in a beaming Mr. Lukas, who just couldn’t wait to tell them all about his special surprise.
Two dozen sets of eyes settled warily on the egg carton the teacher set triumphantly on his desk, but no one said a word.
“Well, now,” he said, eagerly rubbing his hands together in the air over the carton as he looked out over the class. “I hope none of the classes ahead of you have spoiled this little project for you. It is one I like to do every year. Though I suppose those of you with older brothers and sisters will have seen it.”
Kairn leaned over in his seat to whisper to Reida, while still staring at the carton, “What sort of project comes after two weeks of sex ed?”
Reida flashed him a toothy grin. “One with partners?”
He shot back a scowl and shifted back away from her.
“Let’s see…” Mr. Lukas was counting them now, with one long finger bobbing in the air as he eyed each row. “We have twelve girls and twelve boys. Perfect. Now pair up, everyone.”
Reida’s grin grew even wider. “See?” she said, and she gave her desk a shove across the floor towards Kairn’s.
“Have you been listening at all for the last two weeks?”
Mr. Lukas was approaching the first row, open egg carton balanced in one hand. “For the next week you all are going to be mommies and daddies.”
There was a collective groan as he reached into the carton, plucked out an egg, and presented it with a flourish to Ilya.
“You know how people get to be mommies and daddies…” Reida whispered.
“Shut up,” said Kairn.
“Eggs?” said Dalton, who had his desk pushed up against Ilya’s and was now eyeing the egg in her hand with as much suspicion as she was.
“What?” Tess asked. “We couldn’t get baby dolls or something?”
“Ah,” said Mr. Lukas, waving the egg he was about to hand to Daliver at her, “but baby dolls don’t break if you drop them.”
“Or smell after a week,” Daliver grumbled as Mr. Lukas dropped the egg into his hands.
“Again,” said the teacher, moving on down the row, “that’s only if you mishandle them.”
“So we’re supposed to keep it in the fridge?” said Ilya.
“No, you’re supposed to keep it with you. And not let any harm come to it.”
“And so what if it breaks?” said Reida, as he stopped at her desk. “It’s not like we can’t just go get a new one out of the fridge.”
Mr. Lukas turned the egg over before depositing it in her outstretched hands. “Ah, but it won’t be stamped, now will it?”
Reida made a face at the egg, then held it up to show Kairn the rattle stamped on the side. “Aw, look, Kairn. Pink. It’s a girl.”
“Real cute.”
“Here, little baby,” she said, shoving it towards him. “Go to Daddy.”
Kairn sighed as she dumped the egg in his hands. “If there’s a surprise waiting for us in History too, I think I’m just walking out.”
