Michelle pounded her fist on the ground as tears rolled down her cheeks. Her mean brother Christophe hid her purple bear and she couldn’t find it. She looked under her bed, in the closet, in Angelique’s room, and Bello’s room too and she couldn’t find it. Michelle cried harder, setting a rug on fire in her distress. She felt someone pick her up and hold her close.
“Michelle, sweetie, what’s wrong?” Bernard rubbed her back in comforting circles.
“C-Can’t find Julie…m-my bear!” Michelle wailed and clutched Bernard’s shirt.
“Wasn’t she sitting with you over there?” Bernard pointed to the couch in the living room where a few more of Michelle’s toys sat.
Michelle sniffed as she wiped her eyes. “She was, but then Chris came in a-and told me to move a-and I wouldn’t move so he hid her a-and now I c-can’t f-find her!” She dissolved into tears again, burying her face in Bernard’s shirt.
“Don’t worry sweetie, we’ll find her.” Bernard cooed as he rubbed her back. He walked over to the stairs and looked up. “Christophe! Come down here, now!”
Christophe jogged down with Orion behind him. He tried to hide behind Orion’s leg when Bernard shook his head. “Come here, Chris.”
Christophe walked over with his hands in his pockets. “Yes?”
“Where is Michelle’s bear?”
“Julie!”
“Yes, Julie, where is she?”
“I don’t know.” Christophe shrugged. He didn’t look up at Bernard as Michelle’s eyes welled up again.
“Christophe…” Bernard warned.
“I put it in Bello’s toy chest. I didn’t set it on fire or anything.” Christophe grumbled.
“Go get her and come right back. I’ll know if you tried to teleport outside too.” Bernard said.
Chris nodded and trudged back upstairs. Orion followed and shook his head. Bernard turned to Michelle with a reassuring smile. “Don’t worry. Julie will be back soon.”
“Really?” Michelle sniffed and wiped her eyes.
“Yep and I’ll join you for lunch. I’m sorry I had to cancel the other ones, but I had a lot of important things to do.” Bernard hugged her.
“It’s okay, mommy said you were busy.” Michelle leaned against him and sucked her thumb.
“I was, but I’m free to have a wonderful lunch with you.” Bernard smiled and kissed her forehead.
“Really?” Michelle looked up hopefully.
“Yes sweetie, we’re going to have a great lunch.” Bernard kissed her forehead again. He turned to the stairs and shouted, “Chris!”
“I’m coming, I’m coming!” Chris shouted down.
“Excuse me?” Bernard frowned.
“Um, I’ll be down in a bit!” Chris shouted.
“Alene is going to hear about this.” Bernard muttered as he bounced Michelle lightly in his arms.
Michelle grinned as she leaned against him. Mommy could always make Chris be nice to her, like daddy.
A few minutes later, Chris trudged down the stairs with a purple bear. He shuffled over to Bernard and held it out. “Here it is,”
“Thank you,” Bernard took it and handed it to Michelle. “Here you go sweetie.”
“Julie! Thank you daddy!” Michelle hugged the bear against her chest.
“You’re welcome,” Bernard smiled. He turned to Chris. “We’re going to talk later, but until then, do you want to join us? I’m sure Michelle would love to spend time with her favorite guys.”
Michelle looked up at Bernard then down at Chris. “Want to eat?”
“Can I?” Chris looked up at Michelle then Bernard.
“If Michelle says it’s okay.” Bernard said.
Michelle looked at her bear then at Chris. “You can, only if you tell Julie, sorry!”
“I’m sorry,” Chris said to the bear.
“You have to hug her too.” Michelle handed the bear to Chris.
“Eww, I’m not hugging her!” Chris pushed it away.
“Chris…” Bernard warned as Michelle started to tear up again.
Chris grumbled as he hugged the bear and handed her back to Michelle. “There! Can we eat now?”
“Okay!” Michelle smiled and hugged Julie to her chest again. “Let’s go daddy,”
“Alright, let’s eat. Orion, join us please.” Bernard grinned over at the wind demon.
“I would love to,” Orion nodded and walked with them into the living room.
Michelle smiled as she clutched Julie.
Maybe Chris wasn’t so bad after all.
