Haru didn’t like the color green. His eyes were green, the same color of the man who left their family without an explanation. The same color that drove his mom crazy with hate, made his older brother leave, and little sister cry. He didn’t care if Mitsuki had the same eyes, but he didn’t want Juri stuck with that burden.
As Haru grew older, he wore shades to hide his eyes. He didn’t want anyone to see them. Until, he met Shen. The cat demon grew on him in a way he didn’t think would happen.
One day, Haru made the mistake of taking off his shade when he walked into Pandora’s bar. He sat at the bar and waited for Shen to finish his shift.
Shen walked by and smiled. “Hey, I’ll be finished in a bit. I’m just cleaning up.” He collected some nearby glasses.
“It’s fine. I don’t have anything to read over tonight.” Haru placed his suitcase on the bar and sat in the nearest stool.
Shen stopped and looked at Haru. “Hey, it’s the first time I’ve seen your eyes.”
Shit. “Yeah, what about it?”
Shen smiled. “I didn’t know they shined like that in the light. They look nice.” He laughed at the shocked look on Haru’s face. “Don’t look like that. It’s not good for a lawyer to be off guard.”
He walked away with a smirk as Pandora grinned and Sylvia laughed.
Maybe green isn’t that bad after all. Haru chuckled.

Antonio couldn’t stand the shade of green. It reminded him too much of the eyes of his lovely wife, Maria and his sweet daughter, Eve. He missed the way Maria’s eyes shined when she laughed. The same way Eve’s eyes twinkled when she was happy.
He didn’t want anything to do with green. It reminded him too much of his failure as a ruler, a husband, and a father. Bernard understood and kept nothing green in his hospital room. Bernard did the same thing when he moved in the mansion. Antonio appreciated the sentiment. The color hurt too much. He didn’t think he would ever like it.
One day that changed.
One day Bernard called him into one of the sitting rooms. Antonio finished his conversation with Orion and walked in to join him.
“Yes?”
Bernard turned around with a grin. “Remember the promise I made to you when you were in the hospital.”
Antonio drew his lips in a tight line and nodded. “I do,”
“Well, it seems Adam helped us along. I believe you know this beautiful, young lady.” Bernard stepped aside, revealing a Sky Demon female with her dark hair done up in a braid. She looked up and familiar green eyes stared back at Antonio.
“D-Dad?”
Antonio blinked, swallowing his dry throat. “E-Eve?”
Eve smiled. “Dad, dad it is you!” She ran forward and wrapped her arms around his waist. “Dad, I’m so happy to see you again! Adam and his dad were right! They were right!”
Antonio hugged her close as tears rolled down his cheeks. “Eve, I’m so happy you’re okay. I thought I wouldn’t see you again.
“Me either, me either.” Eve said in their native tongue of Espara.
Bernard gave them another smile as he walked out the room.
Antonio gripped Eve and held her close as they sobbed happily in the middle of the sitting room.
Antonio knew he could learn to love green again.

Karou wasn’t a big fan of green, but she didn’t hate it. It reminded her of the robes the council wore when they concluded she had sight. Green reminded her of the mirror that shined whenever something appeared. Good or bad news, it was her responsibility to look at it and not to stop it. She made sure to leave it behind when she packed her bag. On the day she left, she tied a green ribbon in Sushi’s hair and a green sheath for Suzaku’s play sword.
Karou would miss the way her children’s eyes shined when they saw her, but she had to leave. She had to get her mind together before the darkness inside consumed her. She left them each a letter and one to their father before she disappeared into the night. Karou drifted from town to town in her quest to reshape her mind.
In each town, she picked up something for Sushi, Suzaku, and their father Yuki. She didn’t miss holidays, anniversaries, birthdays, or any important date. She was aware that it was a poor substitute for her presence, but the fact that she remembered the dates at all was an accomplishment. She avoided anything green. It was a big reminder of the time she wanted to forget.
One day she started to appreciate the color.
“Mom,”
Karou looked up to see Sushi and Suzaku in the doorway of her bedroom. She smiled and beckoned them inside. “Yes, come in, come in.”
Sushi and Suzaku walked inside and took a seat next to her on the bed. Karou noticed they came to her bedroom many times since she settled in. She didn’t mind. She missed her children and enjoyed their company. Karou was glad they didn’t hold much resentment for her disappearance. She hoped to make it up to them soon.
“What is it, dears?” Karou asked.
Sushi and Suzaku looked at each other before they pulled out a few gifts.
“We bought a few gifts for you throughout the years. We hope you like them.” Sushi handed Karou two gifts.
Suzaku nodded as he handed her two gifts. “There are more, but we have to go get them.”
“Thank you,” Karou accepted the gifts and opened them up. She smiled at the green comb and fan from Sushi, and the blue ribbon and green hair clip from Suzaku. She stood up and wrapped her arms around them in a hug. “These gifts are lovely, thank you.”
“You’re welcome,” Sushi and Suzaku returned the hug as they gripped her dress. Something they haven’t done since they were children.
Karou held them close and started to hum softly.
Maybe green isn’t so bad after all.
