Notes: This was not what I originally had planned for this, but... here it is!

Mommy woke him up early and they tiptoed downstairs, giggling and shushing each other. She put breakfast on a tray and carried it upstairs. Hugh, who was helping, followed with arms full of presents, the feet of his pajamas slipping on the stairs.

Daddy was so happy to see them, laughing and shaking his head. Mommy set the tray down and Hugh jumped on the bed. The three of them ate breakfast together in the bright morning, happy.

Daddy kissed them both afterwards-- Hugh on the forehead, Mommy on the mouth-- and said it was the best Father's Day ever.

--

He woke up when Yvonne got back into bed, grumbling.

"Are you all right?" he asked, stretching across the bed to touch her arm.

"Fine," she snapped, then softened her tone. "I'm sorry. I'm just so tired of being pregnant."

The baby was due in a week; not soon enough for either of them. Hugh couldn't wait to hold his child, and Yvonne must be so exhausted. "It'll be over soon."

"I suppose," she said, and lay down on her side, her back to him.

He moved closer, draped an arm over her side, cupped her belly. "Soon, now."

Soon.

--

Olivia sang out, "Daaaaddy!" as she bounced into the room, ponytail swinging. "Wake up, Daddy, wake up!"

"Mmph." Hugh rolled over and blinked at his daughter, inexplicably a morning person. "What?"

"Daddy," Olivia said. "Come on, get up, it's Father's Day!"

Father's Day, right. He sat up and scrubbed his hands over his eyes. "All right, Sunny, I'm up. I'm up!"

"Good," Olivia said, and without further ado launched herself at him. She landed in his lap and her arms around his shoulders. "I love you, Daddy!" she said, lilting.

"I love you, Sunny," Hugh said, and held her tight.

--

The silence woke him, as it had every day for almost a year.

He wasn't used to this. He'd never get used to this, to a house without Olivia, without her singing as she worked or dancing down the hallways or practicing her instruments.

Her violin and clarinet were still here. He hoped, wherever she was, that she had instruments.

He opened his eyes and stared at the ceiling, at the light slanting across smooth white paint. He was so used to Olivia waking him up.

No point today.

He closed his eyes, and pulled the blankets over his head.

--

Somebody was giggling. Hugh cracked one eye open, caught sight of the three figures lurking by the door.

Oh boy. He braced for impact.

Just in time. Two small girls landed on the bed, shrieking, "Grampa, grampa!" Joanna sat bolt upright, then started laughing, as Felicity followed her sisters.

"Haven't you girls heard of letting a man sleep?" He nevertheless wrapped his granddaughters in both arms and held them tight.

"It's Father's Day," Vivian said.

"Duh," Felicity said, and sat down.

"Happy Father's Day!" Elena said, brightly.

He looked to the door, saw Olivia there, smiling.

Happy Father's Day, indeed.
