Summary:
Shizu looked around her, though she knew where she was and where she was going. Shelce was the human, Shizu was the Guardian, and Shizu would do anything to protect her human. So Shizu wasn’t that strong. It would take time. She could be as strong as the others, and she would, and then Shelce wouldn’t be chained up in this place.
They’d be free…
The forest was still beautiful in its own right. Once a forest set in eternal spring, it felt like winter had seeped in and crushed the warmth out like a tornado. Naked trees held no life anymore. They were dead, petrified. Leaves still crunched under her, and Shizu cringed as each leaf felt like a shattering memory. The Guardian would have to tread carefully.
They were at the center of the wood, the Creature and the decaying Shelce. Creature held a chain in its skeletal hands. Black and white swirls colored its cloak in what looked like running ink blotches. The ink blotches moved. The cowl was pulled back far enough to see its face. Lidless eyes watched Shizu in a kind of anticipation to her next move. Maybe it was waiting for her to do something stupid. If Creature killed Shelce, killed the human inside, Shizu would still be able to control of the body, but…
Shizu didn’t want that…
Its smile made the cold surrounding her grasp her bones. Full of teeth that looked more like needles than anything else, the chill made it close to unbearable. But if Shelce could handle this place, then so could she. Shizu took a breath.
Guardian…Its mouth didn’t move, but she heard it just the same.
“Creature.” Shizu inclined her head as she said the name. She tried not to look at Shelce. She didn’t want to see which part of her was missing now. Maybe Ivy Lee could come and break this thing in half, but…she didn’t know yet how well the man could be trusted. She didn’t know if his girl, Natalia, could either. Trusting too many people is what got them into this mess in the first place.
Kind of you to visit…
“I didn’t come here for you.” Shizu’s voice was loud, strong, proud. She didn’t want anybody to hear or see the fear she had of losing someone as precious as Shelce. No, she didn’t want Creature devouring Shelce too fast. Shizu still needed time to enhance her magic. Ivy was going to help her with that. Ivy was going to set them free.
The thing’s smile widened. It looked like it was cutting its face in half by doing so, but the slight chuckle made choking sounds come out of both girls.
Guardian, do tell Ivy I said hello.
Shizu’s eyes narrowed.
He’s been watching, you know. He smells the decaying heart, he hears the hoarse screams, and he knows Guardian.
Shizu was almost afraid to ask. “He knows what?”
The next word came out as a hiss in the wind. Everything…
Then Creature and Shelce were gone.
