Kennedy's StorySummary: Helena makes a scene at a Christmas party.
Notes: Way after everything I’ve written for this story. This had to happen.
“What do you mean, you didn’t get me anything?”
Helena looked furious, her hands firmly on her hips. She was wearing a tight, form-fitting red dress with a that had captivated Ripley’s attention all evening and admittedly made him look bad next to her with his slightly worn-out jeans and t-shirt under the leather jacket that he had worn way too often now. She hadn't said anything about it even though he knew that she was not happy about it. Kennedy had pulled him away from the others to whisper to him that he should have dressed better but then, how had be been supposed to know that Helena had had the intention to wear an incredibly sexy outfit like that? Sure, she always had on special occasions but she hadn't warned him ahead of time.
Now, the whole room was completely silent aside from the fuming Helena who was staring him down with her dark brown eyes. If looks could kill, he wouldn't even have been able to protect himself by putting on his sun glasses which unfortunately he had forgotten to bring today.
"You didn't tell me you wanted a Christmas present," he defended himself and if possible, the room went even more quiet.
"It's Christmas! I didn't think there was any need for me to tell you I wanted a present. That should have been obvious!" She yelled and he felt a little bad. She did look hotter when she was angry but still, he could see that he was wrong on this one -- not that he would ever admit it.
"Christmas is a commercialist capitalist bullshit. I thought we agreed on that! You were bitching about how you hated Christmas music starting to be played everywhere in late October," he reminded her.
"Hating Christmas music doesn't mean that I don't want my --" She didn't say the word and he was thankful for that. "It doesn't mean that I don't want you to get me something. I love Christmas! You've known me for so long now that you really should know by now."
He was quiet, wracking his brain to think of something to say but she was right and she was close to either crying or exploding.
"You know, sometimes I really wonder what the hell I was thinking when I decided you were likable. I have to remind you of my birthday a million times, you don't think Valentine's Day is worth celebrating and now you don't think I wanted a Christmas gift! What the fuck is wrong with you?"
She was going to explode and start crying at the same time, he could tell, but before she did, she stormed out, not even bothering to take anything.
Ripley looked around at the others in the room who were glaring at them and he didn't want to be here either. He decided that the least he could do was go after her and talk her down, try to make up for his faux pas.
He took her leather jacket that was draped over a chair on his way out with several pairs of eyes following him until he closed the door behind himself. This was why he had told her he hadn't wanted to go to a stupid Christmas party. He had told her repeatedly that if they had to do anything, he's prefer a small, comfortable gathering and not a ton of people she could make a scene in front of.
He knew where he'd find her, on the bench by the street where they'd sat earlier and when he sat down next to her, putting her jacket over her shoulders to keep her warm, she looked up at him with blood-shot eyes that were still more than a little angry.
"I'm sorry," he whispered, trying to take her hand but she pulled it away.
This was more serious than he'd expected it to be. She had really been looking forward to whatever she thought he'd gotten her which was quite a surprise because she hadn't spent most of the past month telling him how excited she was about Christmas. She had been rather low-key about it.
"You're a shitty boyfriend," she growled. "Just go away, okay? I'm really not in the mood for you right now."
He shrugged and got up. "I'll be home if you change your mind." He reached into the pocket of his coat to pull out a slim box out of it, unwrapped, and placed it on the bench next to her before starting to walk away.
It took longer for her to call him back than he'd expected her to but when he heard her yell "Wait!" and turned back around to look at her, she had opened the box and wasn't looking all that upset anymore.
"Fuck you and your practical jokes." There were laughter and tears in her voice as she launched herself into his arms. "You idiot."
"You didn’t seriously expect me to just give you something in front of other people, did you?”
She almost laughed at this and he knew that everything way okay now.
“Was it worth it?"
She nodded, her hand clutched around the box. "I didn't know you had noticed me looking at it."
He didn't say anything, taking the box from her, opening the box and removing the thin gold necklace with the ruby pendant from it and helping her to put it around her neck as she pulled her hair to one side so it wouldn't get tangled in the necklace.
"Let's wait till all these idiots are out of our apartment before we go back in," he suggested and she nodded. Whatever she had gotten him could wait.
