"What do you think of this one?" Corrigan looked up briskly at his now scantly covered girl dressed in sheer purple. He scowled; purple was Tora's favorite color and he rather not have to think of his concubine dressed in the same color his wife would wear.
"No. Discard that one and find another." He ordered, looking back down at the plethora of papers on his table.
The information was unnerving him. The papers showed that many people down below in Relic City were disappearing but not because of death from the disease. By the numbers gone, it was unrealistic. The emperor knew that they were people joining the Sentinels and just the mere thought of a mutiny was enough to make a chill travel up his spine. He put his forehead on his hand in the thought that the day couldn't get any worse.
Chloris glowered at the busy man and as he put his head on his hand, said to the dressmaker. "I'll take it. When it's complete, send it to my headquarters." The seamstress frowned in confusion , but Chloris waved her away not wanting to explain herself to a mere dress woman.
The emperor's head popped up and in the next instant, before Chloris could even make another request, rushed over to her and backhanded her across the face. With a surprised cry, Chloris fell back and into a heap on the ground. Corrigan looked at the seamstress and her helpers with red enraged eyes. "Get out! All of you!" He ordered, the echo of his roar bouncing off the walls. The women scrambled up their things quickly and ran out of the office without a second glance.
Chloris rubbed her reddened cheek, letting out a sharp gasp as footsteps headed her direction. Her steel blue eyes were wide in terror as she met gazes with the emperor who now stood staring down at her.
"I must have been hearing things, Chloris or did I really hear you just now ordering things against my decision?" He kneeled down to the girl's level and smiled. Chloris knew that smile; it usually meant that Corrigan had something evil in store.
Unfortunately, the smile was aimed at her.
As she was thinking this, Corrigan brought her back to attention by smacking her on the face, over and over- lightly at first but gradually getting harder. "Answer me!" He growled out.
Chloris nodded furiously and finally found her voice. "Yes, but...I-I-I..." Corrigan's eyebrow raised for her explanation. "I liked it, was all..." she said softly, not moving her gaze from his. The emperor kept his smile. "Since you like those silks so much..." His sentence trailed off as he stood, fixing his shirt then fixed his concubine with a pointed glare. His voice was monotone.
"Remove your garments. You could walk around bare for all I care." As he turned to exit the room, Chloris shook her head in disbelief as she moved her waves out of her face. She reached her hand out desperately
"James...please..."
"JAMES?!" The enraged emperor swirled back around with wide open eyes. Chloris flinched, bringing her hand back to her body.
"Tora was right. Maybe I have been too damn lenient with you." He growled, swooping down and grabbing Chloris by her long midnight curls. With his hands squeezing down to her scalp, Corrigan hoisted Chloris up, pulling her head back so that he could see into her eyes.
"What's my name?" He asked loudly, ignoring her squeals of pain.
Chloris winced against the stinging aching agony of her hair, crying out in confusion, "Emperor James Corrigan..."
"Wrong. I'm going to ask you only one more time. What's my goddamn name, girl?"
Chloris knew the answer right away. She had hoped that he wasn't making her say it, but she also knew her life was at stake.
"Master. I call you Master." she said, panting in short breaths. "Please, let me go..." she whispered.
The emperor scowled, then threw Chloris back into another heap on the silver marble floor before holding up a hand to slap her once more. His rage was uncontrollable at the moment.
"No!" Chloris screamed out, holding her hands out.
Corrigan stopped, seeing his cowering slave struck a chord in his heart. He came to her in a few short steps, kneeled down and pushed a few strands of hair out of her face. Grabbing her chin, he brought her face up so that he could meet her gaze. Chloris trembled above his touch.
"You know that I could beat you very badly for this, correct?"
Chloris nodded again quick-like, hoping that wasn't the case. The emperor smirked, now stroking her soft hazelnut cheek. "But we don't want to mar this perfect skin, now do we?" Chloris swallowed hard, finding that her throat was as dry as a desert. "No, Master." She whispered. Corrigan nodded.
"It is not your place to make decisions, Chloris. You don't get these silks because you want them, you get them because I make it so. Do you understand me?"
Chloris nodded once more. "Yes, Master. I apologize." She said softly, bowing her head in respect. Corrigan gave a smirk, pulling up his concubine's chin and kissing her full lips deep. Chloris felt her soul lifting to the heavens and she moaned into the kiss; wanting so much more than this lone action.
Corrigan broke the kiss however and stood up. He looked down at Chloris' disheveled appearance and then said, "I'll have the dressmaker come back to make your silks." He held up a finger, adding in a warning voice. "No purple. Got that?"
"Yes, my Master." Chloris nodded, answering and bowing her head. Corrigan gave a curt nod before turning to walk out of the office ordering, "Get up off the ground and do something useful, Chloris."
Chloris waited in silence until she saw the emperor turn the corner and disappear from her view. Once he did, she sighed and by grabbing the edge of the emperor's huge desk, stood up slowly. Brushing away a lone tear, she just stared. She knew that the emperor had given her a second chance and she was lucky to have it; he could have killed her and had every right to.
But he didn't, Chloris realized... and that made her love him even more.
