“Come here, Jasmine.”

Jez scowled in her mother’s direction. “Mom,” she whined, “it’s Jez.”

“Your father and I named you Jasmine after your grandmother and you should respect that. Now come here.”

“Why?” the almost four-year-old asked suspiciously.

“I want you to try your costume on.”

“Mom, I’m being a pirate like Jay! You don’t need to try on being a pirate.”

“You have to try it on, Jasmine.”

Jez sighed loudly and slipped into her parents’ room. Then she stopped dead. “No.”

“Jasmine.”

“Nuh uh. No. I told Jay I’m bein’ a pirate.”

“Den, help me out here,” Alisha said, heaving a sigh.

“Jasmine, honey,”

“Dad, that’s a baby’s costume! Give it to Stella.”

“Your brothers all wore this costume the year they were three,” her mom said.

“But I’m almost four and I wore it last year!” Jez eyed the fluffy chicken costume with horror. “Please, can’t I be a pirate? Kento says I can be Mary Read. She was a famous pirate.”

“She makes a point,” her father said with a shrug. “She wore the chicken without complaint last year.”

“Denham, you’re not helping!”

“I won’t go if I have to wear that. I’ll stay home.”

“But you’ll look so cute.”

“I wanna look fierce, not cute!”

Denham laughed and then tried to school his expression at a look from his wife. “It’s not my fault we’ve got ourselves a tomboy, ‘Lish. It was actually sort of to be expected, all things considered. Anyway, wasn’t Jordan a pirate one year? I’m sure we have whatever she might need.”

“But the family picture!”

“Please, Mom!”

“What if Jasmine agreed to wear the costume in the house for the family picture and then got dressed up as a pirate to actually go trick or treating around the neighborhood? Would that satisfy everyone?” Denham asked, looking between the two females in his life.

Alisha sighed. “I suppose so.”

Jez’s face screwed up as she debated this, eyeing the chicken costume. “Only if I can wear my sword too.”

“Deal,” her father said quickly before they could debate any more.
