Summary: In which Zakiya has a revelation.
The lighting in this room was sparse, but with the red jewel beating at its centre, unnecessary, also. Mara walked two steps behind Zakiya as he circled the room, his feet tracing the same path they had been taking for the last three days.
"The others sent me," she said quietly, not wishing to intrude on the atmosphere but having no other choice. "They wish for you to come back. Eat. Drink. Sleep. You'll meet death before you meet him."
"I saw something again," Zakiya said and the words sent a chill up Mara's spine. "I know that I am right about this one."
"Right about what?" Mara asked. Zakiya stopped and turned on his heel and Mara stopped too, trying not to stumble.
"Seraiah's direct line, it is linked to this one. He will be the one who takes up this fight, but he will not come to us - we must go to him."
"You already said to watch him, Zakiya, you said; remember-"
"I know what I said!" Zakiya snapped. The candlelight made his eyes glitter, so sharp in such a dark face. Mara nodded dumbly. "But then I did not think he was Seraiah's descendant, even less that he was the direct line - I see it all as if it has been lain out before me, from Micah to Bethea to Laban- I am certain. We need to do more than protect him; we need him to help us."
Mara stared at the jewel in the centre of the room. Its presence was absolute; a humming in the back of the mind that she and a handful of others in this place could hear. The Seers couldn't hear it, but they saw the hatching. They all had their own ways, she supposed.
"If you get the boy, the egg will hatch?"
Zakiya nodded. "But we must bide our time. He will not come with us alone and for now, they are all safe. There will come a time when they are not. Then we will offer them sanctuary."
"...All of them?"
"All of them," Zakiya replied. "You know better than I, Mara. We need more than Seers right now. They have so much power amongst themselves. They will share it with us."
Mara took a few deferent steps backwards. "Of course," she said. "I will go and inform the others."
When she looked back over her shoulder, Zakiya was standing by the egg, reaching his hand out as if to touch. She knew he wouldn't. None of them would.
The Hong Se had been created to watch and protect.
They weren't about to interfere.
