The rumble of a engine soon caught my attention. Holding my coffee and frowning, I walked through my house and looked outside the screen door to see who was here. It was a blue F-150 and not a clean one either. Mud and dirt covered almost every inch of it. Who ever it was inside certainly was not a neat freak. Altogether the person had me baffled. “Who the hell is this?” I mumbled. The car stopped slowly on the right side of my house. After a few moments, the front door opened, revealing its driver as my breath left me in a whoosh. “Shit.”

Chaison shut the door and leaned against it crossing his legs and his arms. I stayed where I was hoping that he wouldn’t notice me. I glanced skywards. Please don’t let him notice me. Please…please…please….“That’s a mighty fine way to greet your visitors, Miss Moreland.” Chaison’s voice drifted over to me. I winced at the irony of him catching me at the door but didn’t move a muscle. “Maybe you’re not a visitor. Maybe you’re a trespasser.” Chaison dropped his arms quickly, hearing my response and came up to my porch slowly. “Why did you have to say something like that? I’m not trying to trespass and you know it.” He said, frowning with hurt. I took a sip of my coffee and asked, “Then why are you on my ranch? I didn’t request for you to come here.”

Chaison stopped with his foot resting on one of my porch steps. “I’m here to talk with you for a little while. Is that too much to ask?” I took a swallow of my coffee and answered, “Maybe. Maybe not.” Chaison scoffed then exclaimed, “Phoenix, you are impossible! You know that?” I nodded briefly and shrugged, inwardly smirking at him. It was really amusing to see him so pissed off for nothing. His eyes looked so alive and sexy when he was angry. “You know what? I just came here to make some kind of civil conversation with you, but you just-“ I opened the screen door quickly, tired of his bewailing. “Chaison, you and I are not friends!” Sudden hurt flashed in his eyes but I kept going. “For your information, I’m not being impossible, but just because you watched over me that night; which I DO appreciate, really doesn’t change the way I feel.”

There was silence then Chaison started to come up the stairs. I raised an eyebrow. He was bold…very bold. Chaison must have knew that I was trying to test him. He came onto the porch and stood right in front of me. I slowly met his gaze. He stared down at me and I waited quietly for what he needed to say. Possibly a apology for invading my privacy. “When you think about it, Miss Moreland…you owe me.” I backed away from him rapidly in sudden surprise. “What the hell do I owe you? I don’t owe you shit!” I exclaimed, angrily.

Our conversation was soon cut short by Michaela’s sleepy voice. “Firebird? What’s going on out there?” We both watched as she stuck her head out of the screen door and absorbed the scene. Her eyes were half closed, but when she saw Chaison they became wide open. “Chaison! What are you doing here?” She then looked over at Chaison’s truck as if she were looking for something and asked, “Where’s Josh? Is he in there?” Chaison’s eyes shimmered as he smirked and leaned against the pole of my porch. “No, but he told me to tell you that he said hello.” Michaela’s smile could not have gotten any bigger. She then realized the tension between us. “Well, what are you guys doing?” Chaison looked down at me and said softly, “Nothing, just trying to have a civil conversation.” I opened my mouth but was speechless; held frozen by his gaze. Then he winked. I frowned at the gesture; overwhelmed by the cockiness of this man. “Actually, Mic…he was just about to leave, weren’t you Mr. Kincannon?” The cockiness left his eyes as he now realized that I was serious. Dead serious.
