Summary: Doing some catch up because this was really hard for me to write for some reason. Magic is known to exist in this world and, as one would expect, there are a number of humans that do not like it. Gwyn is a steel witch: a witch that uses war magic to protect the witches and, in this case, her students.

Audrey hesitated as she and Nathaniel turned the corner. LaJoie Academy was at the end of the cobbled avenue, but between them and their high school was a crowd of twenty people, all carrying handmade signs and chanting, 'One, two, three, four. Throw the freaks out the door.'

"I hate this part." she mumbled, shrinking even deeper into her oversized sweatshirt.

Nathaniel entwined his fingers through hers and squeezed them reassuringly. "Don't think about them. They're racist assholes."

She offered him a courageous smile but she didn't feel that way. Nathaniel was a werewolf, for 29 days out of the month he was barely indistinguishable from a normal human. But Audrey was a leimoniad, a meadow nymph, and she looked it. Her pale skin had an unmistakable green shimmer to it and brightly colored flowers naturally grew in her thick gold hair. Her eyes were a little too wide and her ears a little too pointed. There was no mistaking Audrey Glen as a human.

Nathaniel must have seen something of her thoughts on her face because he leaned down to close the considerable height difference between them and kissed her soundly on the mouth. "I think you're beautiful."

Audrey's smile was real this time. She blushed and looked away, right at the protesters. Reality came crashing down. She knew she was letting the protester's shouting get to her but she wasn't strong like a dryad or oceanid. Leimoniads were as gentle and peaceful as the meadows they were associated with. All that hate stressed her out like nothing she'd ever encountered before.

"Let's just do it," Audrey said.

Nathaniel nodded and squeezed her hand again. "Stay close."

The protesters spotted them and turned around so they could yell directly at them. Nathaniel made sure to stay a step ahead of Audrey so he could push his way through the angry crowd first. It made him want to break these douchebags' necks every time they targeted her just because she looked different. Audrey was incapable of hurting any living thing, much less another sentient being, but all these people cared about were her pointed ears and the green tint to her skin.

Nathaniel and Audrey had nearly shoved their way through when one of the braver protesters grabbed Audrey's arm and jerked her to a stop. Nathaniel bared his sharp canines in a snarl. "Get the fuck off her!"

He grabbed the man's hand and jerked it away from Audrey's skin with all of his werewolf strength but the damage was done. Audrey stared up at the angry man, her eyes wide with fear. The protester saw the weakness and started right back in on her, telling her to go back to Satan where she belonged.

"Audrey!" Nathaniel grabbed her hand harder and tried to jerk her forward but the humans had surrounded her and she was frozen in spot, scared to death of the way they screamed their hate and pushed their signs in her face. "Audrey, come on!"

"What the hell?"

Nathaniel heard the voice and turned. It was Ms. Tremayne, the Magical Defense teacher. She sprinted out of the Academy gates and spun once then slammed her witch's broom down flat on the ground. Out of the bristled end a wave of bright orange energy shot towards them. Her magic weaved through the crowd then burst outwards with a low boom. The protesters were thrown into the air and tumbled back thirty feet before they all landed on their feet again.

Ms. Tremayne ran to the two high schoolers still in the exact same spot they'd been before. "Are you alright?" she asked gruffly.

"Yes," Audrey whispered, still scared.

The teacher looked her over, noting both Nathaniel's death grip on her hand as well as the bright red mark blossoming on her upper arm. Ms. Tremayne's menacing orange eyes narrowed. "Go inside."

Audrey was the first one to react this time. She ran to the front entrance of LaJoie Academy. Nathaniel pulled her to a stop just inside the gates.

"Come on, Nathaniel," Audrey hissed. She wanted to get as far away from the humans as she could.

"Hold on." Nathaniel stayed inside the gates but he looked back at the street. At first glance, one small woman against a crowd of hateful people would be laughable, but the crowd didn't dare come any closer to her. They probably didn't know Gwyneth the Fierce's history but they didn't need to. Ms. Tremayne was terrifying even without the footnote.

Ms. Tremayne strode down the middle of the street to the very edge of the LaJoie property. She glared at the protesters farther down the cobbled road. "I have been forced to tolerate your racist hate because the law says that you may exercise your freedom of speech in peaceful demonstrations."

She pointed the end of her broom at the protesters and the whole group scooted back with an audible gasp. "But lay another finger on one of my students, and I will take that as an invitation to show you all just how intolerant I really am."
