Summary: Three days into kindergarten, they meet.

He's not like the other boys.
For the first two days he sits on the sidelines, watching his classmates play. being left out doesn't bother him too much-- it's like he's watching tv, kinda.
On the third day, he sees her.
She's standing alone, seemingly oblivious to the chaos surrounding them, chin tucked against her chest, arms folded. At first he can see nothing of her but a head of untamed hair. Then, as if sensing his gaze, she sharply turns to stare at him with wide and unblinking eyes.
His heart begins to race. When he stands, she makes her way toward him. They meet somewhere in the middle.
"Hi." The dark circles under her eyes rival his own. Looking at her is unbearably familiar, he realizes with a jolt.
"Hi."
"I like your dress."
She shrugs.
For three minutes, they're silent. Then--
"I think-" She looks away. "I think we should be best friends." Frustration lines her voice, because to try to put this into words is impossible.
He smiles. He takes her hand and she doesn't flinch. "I know."
Their relief nearly chokes them.
