Every Labor Day weekend, Summer's family went up to Connecticut to the town by the big lake where her papa had grown up. She loved it there, loved the quiet and the smell of the forest and the way she could lie on her back in the water, staring up at the endless blue sky. At night, Papa would take her outside and show her all the stars, the pinpricks of light in the sky that made pictures and stories. She would sit on his lap and lean back against his chest and follow his hand while he traced the constellations for her.

She hated coming back because the city was big and loud and noisy, people everywhere, pressing on her mind. Usually she spent a few days in her room. But this year, she couldn't do that, because this year she was six, in first grade, and she had to go to school early in the morning and not come home until the afternoon. And that was the trouble.

School was hard. The other children either teased her or ignored her, someone took her lunch, and Teacher gave her strange looks. It got worse at recess when she was all alone on a swing, kicking her legs because she felt she ought, and a siren went past and startled her so she jumped and then another kid pushed her off the seat and told her to go somewhere else if she wasn't going to swing.

Lars came to get her, at least. She was very glad to see Lars, and to put her hand in his, because Lars would walk her home where it was quiet and maybe then he would sit with her and drink tea before he had to go. Summer liked tea. Tea was calming.

Except then another siren went past right on the street they were walking on, and it was so noisy she put her hands over her ears and tried not to hear it, and that made the lady walking near them ask her if she was all right, which made her shake her head and back up into Lars, which made him put his hand on her shoulder and then the lady frowned and reached out and grabbed Summer's hand and pulled her away from Lars, who was the only solid and real thing in the whole world all of a sudden because all the lights were too much and the noises were too big and the stars were gone, bleached out by the sun and hiding in the clouds and her papa was gone and the lake was gone and all that was there was noisy mean smelly world and if she wasn't careful it would gobble her up...

After that, all she could do was cry.
