Title: Tornado
Summary: Hailey felt like she was trapped in the middle of a tornado.

Hailey sat in the middle of a farmer's field on the eve of her fifteenth birthday. Her thick black hair moved a little in the gentle breeze and she watched the horizon for anything. She was glad that it was summer, be stuck outside in the middle of the night in the dead of winter was nobody's idea of fun.

Off to the side her immediate and extended family stood, waiting with anticipation. Like every other elemental her powers would come at midnight on her fifteenth birthday. It was a time of celebration for the families.

"What time is it?" Hailey asked.

"One minute left," her father answered and Hailey started to stand up. She stretched out her arms and legs, which were stiff from sitting in the same position for too long. After she finished stretching Hailey looked around the field, which was still just as empty as it was before.

Hailey knew when midnight hit, not from the chiming of a nonexistent clock but because the wind picked up. Her hair whipped around her head and Hailey felt like she was trapped in the middle of a tornado. She screamed but could not hear herself over the howling of the wind in her ears.

It was nothing more then a will to live, a will to stay on the ground, that she gained control over the wind. Hailey forced the wind to slow down within a few minutes. She peeled her eyes open to see that there was no tornado around her but the wind was still stronger then it had been before.

It took a lot of energy for Hailey to calm the winds down again. By the time the wind was back to a gentle breeze, Hailey was on her knees on the ground, panting for breath. She looked to her left, where her family stood, to see everyone cheering for her.

"You did great," her father said in her ear once they reached her.

"I'm so tired," Hailey said, still unable to stand.

"Its like that the first time," her mother said on her other side. "It'll get easier with training."

"Good," Hailey said. She was half carried back to the car by her parents, barely listening to the advice her family was giving her on all sides.
