“Why did you do that? Of all the idiotic things to do this one takes the cake!” Albert yelled.
“I’m fine! No one was hurt and we made it out before anything could happen. There’s no need for you to get angry!” Bernard yelled back.
“I’m angry because you jumped in once again without thinking!”
“I don’t do that all the time!” “
Yes you do! You jump in without thinking about the consequences. What if you were hurt? You could have died!’
“But I didn’t and that’s all that counts!”
Albert growled. “That doesn’t matter. You could have!”
“Let it go! I’m fine!”
“If you died, what would I tell Alene? Your family?”
“They would know I didn’t waste my life!”
“Why did you jump in an ice river? I could have made it to the surface!”
“Do you think I would have honestly left you behind? No! If you can’t accept that I don’t know what to say!”
Albert gaped at Bernard. He looked down at his hands. “Y-You mean it?”
“Yes. I do.” Bernard walked over and wrapped Albert in a hug. “When you dropped beneath the surface and didn’t pop back up, I jumped in after you. If I didn’t go back for you I wouldn’t be able to live with myself. I couldn’t go back to Alene or my family, not without you.”
“You care that much about me?” Albert whispered.
“I do.” Bernard tightened his hold. “I can’t believe you didn’t think so.” “
I just thought--”
“I know sometimes I don’t show it, but I’m glad you have my back. I’m glad there’s someone who would protect Alene and watch out for my kids. My parents trust you. My siblings trust you and I trust you. I’m sorry if I made you feel anything less than that.”
Albert rubbed Bernard’s back. “It’s alright. I don’t have to worry about not having any excitement. I just want you to think next time. We’re not kids anymore. I can’t drag you to Alene to get patched up all the time.”
Bernard grinned. “Alene told me the same thing just last week.”
Albert smiled. “It’s because we know you so well. Let’s go, we need to check in and let them know we’re okay.”
Bernard pulled out his phone. “Ready when you are.”
Albert and Bernard walked out of Albert’s office and into the hallway.
