By now the bar is empty aside for the two of them and the bartender who keeps bringing
them round after round of drinks, anything really as if they asked to sample everything he has to offer. The man with the hat knocks everything back and Kairn follows suit, not wanting to be the first one to back out. He isn’t sure how he is going to pay for all of this, he originally only planned to have a drink or two but things have escalated by now and there is no turning back.

Kairn isn’t sure how he first came to sit at this table with the man with the hat who introduced himself as Wes and is rattling on and on about how he doesn’t understand women.

“Whatever your girlfriend is like, can’t be worse than Reida,” he throws in. Mostly he’s just been pretending to listen but why not talk? It’s not like he will meet this man again and who else is he supposed to talk to about this? Certainly not Sethan.

“She sleeps with other men,” Wes protests.

“So do you!” Kairn reminds him, something he has picked up in the conversation; Wes isn’t one to keep these things secret, he even seems proud. He quickly corrects himself, “Well, women. Believe me, Reida is worse. She’d tie me to a bed, drug me and sleep with me if she got the chance to.”

“That sounds hot,” Wes says dreamily, tilting his head to one side and closing his eyes.

Kairn has the impression that the other man is imagining himself in that situation. “You don’t understand. She’s sadistic and she just doesn’t understand that I’m not interested. The things she did to scare off my girlfriends!”

“Are you scared of her? Sure sounds like it.” He grins at Kairn who would be annoyed had he not heard that accusation a million times before. It is partially true and there is no point to denying it.

“You’d be scared of her, too if she did to you what she does to me. She’d scare your accidental fiancée away in a minute. She used pincers and there was one girl whose clothes almost ate her and then there was that plague of dead rats.”

“Pincers?” Wes repeats, his eyes suddenly fluttering open. “What’s that supposed to mean? Is that something sexual? And can you lend her to me? Just so she can scare Shirley away and I don’t have to do break up with her? Please?”

Kairn feels his jaw drop at those words. He has figured out by now that this Wes person is not normal from their conversation but who would want something like this? Not that he has much experience breaking up with girls. Usually, Reida is involved in that and he is broken up with because no girl can put up with Reida for too long but that’s not his fault. He never asked her for any of this.

“Tell her that she could choose what she wants to do to Shirley. I’m not picky, just not hurt the baby ‘cause I’d get in real trouble for that.”

“Your girlfriend is pregnant and you want to get Reida to scare her away just so you don’t have to break up with her?” It makes no sense at all but it’s too messed up for Kairn. This one might actually get along with Reida. “I’m out of here.”

When he leaves the bar, he doesn’t even bother to pay the tab; Wes can do that. He feels that the man with the hat deserves it.
