1.56 a.m.
25th September 1929.
New York City, USA.
They ran. As soon as he'd seen the Guardian through the haze of cigarette smoke in the club, Benjamin had grabbed his sister's hand and pulled her out into the night. She hadn't fought him and when she'd seen the Guardian over her shoulder, she'd laughed.
"He's no match for us, Benji!" she shouted, her voice mixing with the background noise of shouting and laughing, with the sound of jazz music and the clack of heels on the street.
People watched them run, watched the man who chased them, but no one intervened.
Benjamin pulled his sister down an alleyway and out of sight, dragging her into shadows when the man ran past. She was still laughing, still trying to suppress her giggles.
"Shut up, Becky," he muttered, putting a hand over her mouth. "He'll find us if he hears us."
She rolled her eyes, but at least she'd stopped laughing. Benjamin removed his hand. "They'll not find us," she said, "Not again. We knew it would happen today."
They had done.
They were known as the Twins. With a capital 'T' that they'd earned through five straight years of criminal activity, never getting caught. This had been the riskiest venture yet. Every traveller with any kind of criminal inclinations knew that the Wall Street Crash would be the best time to make money. They knew it down to the day.
The Guardians knew too - that was why there were always a few keeping look out, keeping an eye on any unusual activity. They'd suspended themselves here, just a step out of time with regular people so that they could keep watch.
They'd not come up against the Twins before. Benjamin wandered over to the edge of the alley and looked out. The Guardian who had chased them was nowhere in sight.
"You wanna stay out?"
Becky, playing with the hem of her dress, shook her head, before bouncing over to her brother. "Nah, it's boring here. Besides, it's all going to hell soon. Let's just get our money and leave, shall we?"
Benjamin grinned and held out his arm. His sister took it.
They walked back to the suburbs, where they were staying, Becky's shoes crunching the newly-fallen leaves as she kept up with his pace. They could have travelled, Benjamin supposed - but it was difficult to negotiate simply moving through space and not time and besides - the Guardians would be looking for them, now. It wasn't the best plan in the world.
Benjamin unlocked the door and Becky immediately bounded upstairs. She'd bought a lot of clothes in the last few days. He was just glad a lifetime of moving on meant she knew how to pack quickly.
He went for the safe. There was a lot of money in there, enough to leave them comfortable for the rest of their lives - though he knew it wouldn't stop them from looking somewhere else, doing what they did somewhere else. They enjoyed this, that was the thing.
When he heard a noise outside, Benjamin's hand moved to his pocket. He carried on stuffing the money into a bag he'd pulled from under the couch and hauled it over his shoulder when he was done. There was another noise and he froze. Someone was definitely out there.
"Hey, Becky?"
"Yeah?"
Benjamin crossed the room and walked out into the hall, standing at the bottom of the stairs. "Remember Cornwall?"
The tone of his sister's voice changed. "Sure I do."
"Good." Benjamin smiled; he heard a noise near the front door. "I'll see you there."
The door burst open but he pulled the watch from his pocket a second and a half before the Guardian got his hands on him. Benjamin vanished and the Guardian clutched nothing but air.

19th March 2009.
Cornwall, England.
Benjamin felt the wind ruffle his hair, the shifting of sand beneath his feet. It smelt like salt, brine. He opened his eyes.
Cornwall beach. He'd never forget it, no matter how hard he tried.
Becky arrived three seconds later, looking slightly annoyed, though he knew it wasn't directed at him. "Can't believe they found us," she groused, wobbling a little as she reached and took off her shoes. She hadn't got anything else with her; clearly she'd not managed to grab a bag before they left and Benjamin could already see goosebumps forming on her skin.
"Never mind," he said, shifting the bag of money meaningfully. "Let's find ourselves somewhere to exchange this and get some warmer clothes, shall we?"
Becky nodded, curling her toes into the sand. "We're gonna have to pick a new meeting place too, y'know."
Benjamin hooked his free arm through his sister's. "Yeah. I know."
