Title: Hieroglyphs and Gossip
Summary: Denise runs into an old friend in the last place she expected,
"Kim," Denise called out and watched as a woman with familiar straight, red hair turned at the call of her name. "What are you doing here?"
Denise stood just inside the entrance of the Karnak Temple Complex near Luxor in Upper Egypt. It was the last place that she expected to see her old roommate from her first year at the University of Guelph.
Kim looked like she did when she was younger. The main difference was the dark tan she had acquired and the sunglasses perched on the bridge of her nose when she used to refuse to wear sunglasses.
"I'm working with an excavation team here in the Valley of the Kings," Kim said, hugging Denise. It had been years since they had seen each other. "But what are you doing here? Shouldn't you be off running a successful vet practice."
"My husband sent me here for a vacation for two weeks. The practice can survive without me," Denise said, smiling. Sunglasses covered her eyes, protecting them from the sun. Most of her skin was covered with cloth; Denise did not want to return home red as a tomato.
"Very nice husband you have," Kim said, leading her into the shade and out of the blazing hot Egyptian sun. "Where is he now?"
"Not here," Denise said. "He's on tour with his band."
"You married a rock star?" Kim's eyes were wide with surprise. "Now I've got to here this story."
"Only after I hear how you ended up here out of all places," Denise said. "Last time I heard from you, you were considering transferring universities."
"I did. I went to Wilfred Laurier to get my Bachelor's," Kim explained. "I got my PhD at the University at Toronto. I got lucky and got noticed and ended up here."
Kim shrugged her shoulders like it was nothing to end up working in Egypt. In the shade of the pillars of the Karnak Temple Denise was amazed at how far they had both gotten.
When they had met they had been scared freshmen, not knowing what to expect. Now Kim spent her days in the sands of Egypt, working in one of the most famous cemeteries in the world. Denise spent her days wrist deep in blood while doing surgeries.
"We can catch up on all the missed time while I give you a tour of the temple," Kim said. "It was built for the gods known as the Theban Triad: Amun, Mut and Montu."
"What's better then a free tour and catching up with you?" Denise asked.
"Nothing, I hope."
"Damn right," Denise answered, laughing. They headed into the complex, walking among the hieroglyphs and carvings of the ancient gods, catching up on too many missed years.
