Pleasant SurpriseTitle: Normal Day
Toppings: Chopped Nuts (Thief AU)
Summary: A typical day with Bernard, Alene, and their family.
Word count: 4,557
Notes: It took me awhile to finish this for some reason. This AU features the Winchesters and their friends as humans with magical powers. They're part of a Thief Guild with their friends and family. Albert is a scientist and not a Necromancer. Susie is alive and Seth lives with them. Well I'll explain more of this AU later. Enjoy!
Bernard groaned, glaring at the sound of the alarm clock on his dresser. He knocked it over before sitting up in bed. He rubbed his eyes and stretched his arms above his head. Bernard looked over to Alene and smiled at her sleeping form. He ran a hand through his hair, thinking about his schedule. There was the meeting with Daisuke and his Guild of Thieves and Assassins. Then there was the political meeting with Michel and the other mayors of Alu. Bernard hoped he didn’t have to work late tonight.
He stood up from bed walking over to the bathroom. He stopped when the phone in their room went off. Bernard answered it as Alene stirred.
“Hello,”
“Hi dad,”
Bernard took a seat on the bed from the weariness in Bello’s voice. “What’s wrong?”
“It’s Mariah, I know she’s going through the change, but she’s upset this morning. Cassie isn’t helping either by telling her she can’t do anything for the Guild or finish her job. Then don’t get me started on Dmitri-”
“Bello, if you can, put Mariah on the phone.”
“Dad, are you sure?”
“Positive,”
“Okay one minute,”
Bernard heard Bello shuffle into Mariah’s room where another argument took place. He could hear Cassie screaming in the background, until Bello calmed her down. A few minutes later Mariah appeared on the line.
“Grandpa?” Mariah asked wearily.
“Hey kiddo, what’s going on?” Bernard asked.
Mariah sniffed. “Mom won’t let me do anything. I have a job I need to finish for Dmitri’s Guild and my partner needs me. She won’t let me go because I failed some stupid test.”
“You know school is important. Did you do a night job?”
“…”
“Mariah…”
“I had to grandpa! If I didn’t Charlene wouldn’t have her stuff back until the city council remembered to release it. It was only a science test nothing important.” Mariah grumbled.
“Being a good thief means having street smarts as well as book smarts. No one is telling you to become your Aunt Angelique, but we do ask that you get a B at least.” Bernard said.
“I did!”
“Mariah,”
“Ok, so maybe I got a D, but I can pass with it!” Mariah pleaded.
Bernard chuckled. “Yes a D is better than a F, but it’s still a D. I’m sorry, but you’ll have to listen to your mom on this one. Is the job a day one?”
“Yes,”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes,”
“Okay, finish that and then study. If you need any help, ask Angelique. Just don’t ask her about dissecting anything or anyone. Alan asks enough questions about that.”
Mariah giggled. “Alan said he only asks so he can be a better chef.”
“Yes that’s the same excuse Angel used when she was a kid. Tell him, nice try.”
Mariah giggled again. “I will,”
Bernard smiled. “Alright, well, it’s time for you to get ready for school. I’ll talk to you later okay?”
“Okay, thanks grandpa.”
“You’re welcome sweetie. Can you give the phone back to your dad?”
“Sure thing,”
There was a pause until Bello’s voice traveled through the phone once again.
“Hey dad, thanks, Mariah feels much better now.”
“I’m glad she does. Well I’m sure you have to get ready for work, right?”
“Yeah,”
“Then I’ll talk to you later.”
“Okay, thanks again.”
“No problem, tell Alan, Belmont, and Allison I love them. Say hi to your wife too.”
Bello chuckled. “I will, bye dad.”
“Bye,” Bernard hit the button with a relieved sigh. Mariah was a sweet girl, but her views continued to conflict with her mother’s. Mariah was a thief, but Cassie didn’t like that. She didn’t like marrying into a family of thieves, only Bello was the good one in her eyes. Mariah loved her family’s heritage and didn’t like when Cassie shot it down. Bello ended up playing referee between them every time. Bernard helped Bello play referee and other times he helped Mariah. He loved his grandchildren. He started to accept Cassie’s presence.
Alene giggled taking a seat next to him. “Looks like another eventful morning.”
Bernard smiled. “As always,” He kissed Alene. “It’s a normal thing. Mariah has a job to do, but Cassie doesn’t like it.”
“Did she think we were joking when we said we were a family of thieves?” Alene smoothed down her bed head.
Bernard shrugged. “I guess, but she doesn’t like that Mariah and Alan are learning more about Guilds and science and-”
“The world we live in.” Alene said.
Bernard nodded. “Pretty much,”
Alene sighed getting up from the bed. “She’ll come around soon. I hope,”
“Me too,” Bernard walked to the bathroom with Alene. It was time to start his day.
*~*~*
Bernard walked downstairs smoothing down his hair when an explosion sounded to his right. He looked over the banister as Angelique and Susie ran out the lab. Bernard shook his head in amusement. “Good morning Angel, Susie,”
“Morning Dad,” Angelique said.
“Morning Mr. Winchester,” Susie smiled.
Bernard noticed a person missing from their group. “Hey where’s Al?”
Angelique and Susie exchanged a look before turning to Bernard.
“He’s with Chris, but I think they’re fighting.” Susie said as Angelique nodded.
“Do you know where they are?” Bernard asked.
“LEAVE ME ALONE!” Albert yelled storming into the parlor.
“Al, please, let me explain.” Christophe pleaded following behind.
Bernard grinned. “I got it. I’ll see what’s up, you guys try to put out the fire that may be happening in the lab.”
“Oh my goodness!” Susie exclaimed running back into the lab.
Angelique grabbed the emergency water charm and ran back into the lab. Bernard chuckled and turned to Christophe and a fuming Albert. It was unusual to see Albert lose his temper. Bernard feared Christophe did something Albert wouldn’t forgive so quickly. It wouldn’t be surprising. Christophe did inherit his notion to act first then question later.
“What’s going on guys?” Bernard asked.
Albert pointed an accusing finger at Christophe. “He went into my room and got rid of this pile of fabric I was going to use to make an outfit.”
“You don’t like clutter, so I thought I was helping.” Christophe responded.
“Well you could have told me before throwing it out!” Albert exclaimed.
Christophe glared. “Yeah, why didn’t you put it in the hamper!? It would make sense, you tell me that all the time!”
Albert fumed. “Oh you have a lot of nerve-”
“Okay, okay I think it’s time for us to stop yelling and start talking. Follow me,” Bernard turned and walked into the kitchen. Albert and Christophe glared at each other before following Bernard.
Bernard settled at the table while Albert and Christophe settled at other ends of the table. Bernard couldn't believe the look on Christophe’s face. Bernard saw many of Christophe’s lovers come and go, but he never saw Chris shed a tear over it. Christophe looked like he wanted the table to eat him.
“Now, Albert, why was the pile of fabric so important?” Bernard asked.
Albert messed with a loose strand on his shirt avoiding Chris and Bernard’s eyes. “I was in the process of making an outfit, but I needed those pieces to finish it.”
“Okay, now Chris did you ask Albert about it? Or did you just throw it away,” Bernard said.
Christophe pointed at Albert. “Well, he-”
“Chris, what did you do?” Bernard asked.
Christophe sighed. “I threw it out. Albert doesn’t like clutter so I threw it out thinking it was trash.”
“It wasn’t trash! I tried to tell you, but you threw it out anyway!” Albert exclaimed.
“Only because I thought it was your scrap pieces!” Chris responded.
Albert opened his mouth when Bernard held up his hand, stopping the incoming comment. “Now Albert, why are these scraps of fabric important?”
Albert settled in his chair picking at the table. “I was making an outfit.”
“For who?” Bernard asked.
Albert pointed to Christophe his cheeks flushing lightly. “Chris, I thought he found out and threw my scraps away because of it.”
“I-I didn’t know that. You were making an outfit for me?” Chris asked.
Albert nodded. “I noticed your regular outfit had tears in it, so I wanted to make you a new one as a surprise. When I saw the scraps disappear, I became so angry because I thought you didn’t want it. Do you still want the outfit?”
Christophe smiled. “Of course I do. You make the best clothes Al.” He stood up and walked over to Albert. “I’m sorry I threw out the scraps.”
Albert smiled standing up from the chair. “I’m sorry I yelled at you.” He placed his hands on Christophe’s chest leaning up for a kiss. Christophe pulled Albert close and met him halfway. Bernard grinned at the scene as someone placed a mug in front of him. He turned to greet Antonio. “Morning Antonio,”
“Morning Bernard,” Antonio stood up looking at the happy couple. “I see Christophe and Albert settled their differences.”
“Yeah I’m glad they did. I knew it was nothing too serious.” Bernard picked up his mug, taking a sip of coffee. He sat back as Chris and Albert reconciled when he heard, “Aww how cute,” above him.
Everyone looked up at Kia who sat on the chandelier with Adam. Bernard laughed. “Kia, Adam, how long have you been up there?”
“For awhile, we were practicing our chandelier heist skills when the show happened. That was so nice, I’m glad you two made up!” Kia called down happily.
“She’s right, you two can’t fight for long anyway. The fight was silly too.” Adam said.
“Hey stop eavesdropping!” Chris yelled while Albert laughed. He turned to Albert. “Come on Al, let’s go get more materials for my outfit.”
Albert smiled. “Okay, let me stop by the lab first and then we can go.”
Chris smiled. “Sweet,” He walked out of the kitchen with his arm around Albert’s waist. Albert placed his head on Chris’ shoulder on their way out.
Bernard chuckled as Antonio placed two mugs on the table. He looked up at Adam and Kia. “Your coffee is ready! I put in your favorite coffee creamer as well.”
“Cool! Come on Adam,” Kia grabbed Adam’s hand she muttered a spell and they disappeared from the chandelier. They reappeared in their seats at the table. Kia picked up her mug turning to Antonio with a smile. “Thank you,”
“Thank you,” Adam echoed, picking up his mug.
Antonio nodded. “Not a problem.”
“What’s on the agenda today?” Bernard asked.
“I have my gymnastic class to teach and my yoga class too.” Kia sipped from her mug.
“I have two Russian letters to translate then I’m getting help to translate a Mandarin letter.” Adam said.
“Sounds good, do you have any jobs tonight?” Bernard asked.
Kia nodded. “Yep we have another one with Seth. This time we have a diamond to nab.”
“At the time the council thought it was a good idea to take it. Now we think it’s time we take it back.” Adam said.
Bernard grinned. “I couldn’t agree more, but be careful. Don’t forget to wear your mask.”
Kia beamed. “We won’t, right Adam. Adam?” She nudged Adam knocking him out of his daydream. “Huh? Oh yeah we’ll wear them, no worries.”
Bernard looked at Adam curiously who avoided his gaze. He turned to the food Antonio placed in front of him. “Okay, but I want to see you before you go.”
“Okay,” Kia said as Adam mumbled an agreement.
I hope Adam is feeling alright. Bernard casted another concerned look at Adam before eating breakfast.
*~*~*
“So, what do you think Daisuke?” Bernard asked.
Daisuke smirked. “I can follow these terms. You get what the Mayors took from us and we’ll help you in our own special way.” He chuckled at the meaning.
Bernard laughed ignoring the chill down his spine. “So, we’re good?”
Daisuke held out his hand. “We are,”
Bernard gripped Daisuke’s hand giving it a firm shake. “Nice doing business with you.” He sat back feeling good about getting through his first meeting when his phone rumbled in his pocket.
Bernard pulled it out looking at the number. He turned to Daisuke. “I need to take this, do you mind?”
Daisuke shook his head. “Not at all,”
“Thanks,” Bernard walked into the hallway and answered his phone. “Hello,”
“Hey dad,”
“Hi Enzi, what’s going on?”
“Nothing much, I just wanted to know if you wanted to eat at the new restaurant with me, Uncle Albert, and Angel.”
“Yeah I do, I’ll meet you there.”
“Okay,”
“Okay, but before I go how did the recording session go?”
“Great dad, we’re almost done with the recordings then we can put the CD together. Will you listen to it?”
“Of course, I’ll just skip the more suggestive songs.”
Enzi laughed. “Thanks for listening.”
Bernard smiled. “No problem. I’ll see you in a bit.”
“Okay bye dad,”
“Bye,” Bernard closed the phone staring at it fondly. Funny how Enzi used to sing songs in his favorite spoon for fun, now he’s making CDs. Man time is moving too fast. He chuckled, walking back to Daisuke’s conference room.
*~*~*
“Angel, what happened to your eyebrows?” Bernard asked in the restaurant.
Angelique laughed. “Oh you know, just another lab experiment that’s all. Albert wasn’t paying attention to his concoction. He put in the wrong chemicals again.” She sighed shaking her head in disbelief. “The work of Chris, but it’s okay. Albert is happy and that’s the important part.”
“It is,” Bernard agreed. “So, Enzi, are you done for the day?”
“Not yet, I have another recording session today. It’s a duet I’m doing with Sparkle.” Enzi sipped his water.
“Ooo Sparkle, that’s so cute!” Angelique cooed.
Enzi flushed lightly. “I don’t think so Angel. It’s only a professional relationship that’s all.”
“Now is Sparkle the new singer?” Albert asked.
“Yeah she normally works with Roy, but she decided to work with me. I wonder why?” Enzi toyed with his fork.
“I think that means she likes you and wants to work with you. Then again who knows?” Angelique shrugged with a giggle.
“Of course, she likes me I talk to her a lot. It’s my first time working with her though.” Enzi said.
“I’m sure she’ll enjoy it. I don’t see why she wouldn’t.” Bernard said.
“I hope so, now if I can only find the person taking my jobs.” Enzi sighed.
“Good luck,” Angelique said.
“Well, if you need help don’t hesitate to ask. I know a lot of good traps.” Albert said.
Enzi shook his head. “Oh no, I don’t want to trap her. I just want to catch her at the same time, so we can talk.”
“There are ways to do that. Talk to your mom she can rearrange the jobs and get you an earlier one. Try it, I’m sure you can catch her.” Bernard said.
Enzi mulled over the idea a bit before nodding in agreement. “I’ll go ask mom after the recording today. Thanks,”
Bernard grinned. “Anytime,”
*~*~*
Bernard bit back a yawn during the meeting. He didn’t enjoy the weekly meetings in Alu. They were long, boring, and it accomplished nothing. Any of the law on the roster was pushed back because one mayor didn’t agree with the other one. It dissolved into an argument that lasted for hours. It kept Bernard away from all the paperwork he had to file and his jobs. Their nightly jobs accomplished more than the meetings.
Bernard sighed, sitting back in his chair. He perked up when his phone vibrated. He pulled it out looking at the text icon. Bernard looked up at Michel arguing with Kevin another Mayor. He had enough time to answer the phone.
To: Bernard
From: Alene
Something is up with Adam. Help me talk to him when you come home. See you then. Love you!
Bernard looked at the screen in concern before slipping the phone back in his pocket. I knew something was up. I wonder what is it? The message distracted him the entire meeting. He hoped nothing was seriously wrong with Adam.
*~*~*
Bernard escaped anyone trying to discuss a problem after the meeting. He quickly finished his paperwork, evaded more people, and finished his shift on time at seven. Bernard looked around his office again before walking out. He knew Adam finished work at five, so he would be home finishing a letter. There would be time to talk with Adam before his job with Kia. Bernard walked outside the building and muttered a teleportation spell.
Bernard arrived on the front step and walked through the door. He greeted Antonio and Orion on his way to the living room. Alene sat on the couch going over the night schedule for their Guild. She looked up at the sound of his footsteps. “Hello Bernard, how was your day?”
“Long and boring, but I’m done now and that’s what counts.” Bernard leaned forward kissing Alene lightly. Alene broke the kiss with a smile. “I’ll never tire of that.”
Bernard grinned. “Me either, now what about the text you sent me today. Is Adam ok?”
Alene sighed shaking her head. “No, but he refuses to talk to anyone about it. I don’t understand the problem. He won’t go to anyone, not Chris or Angel or Michelle or Bello. Enzi is out the question and he even cut off the connection to Kia. I wish I knew what was going on.”
Bernard tapped his finger against his chin. “This doesn’t sound good. He hasn’t talked to anyone, not even Antonio?”
“No,”
“Let’s go, something is definitely wrong.”
Alene nodded getting up from the sofa. “It is. I hope we can help him.”
“Me too Lene, me too,” Bernard walked out the living room with Alene. They quickly walked to Adam’s room, hoping the recent explosion from the lab wasn’t too bad.
Bernard knocked on the door lightly.
“Go away,” Adam called out.
“Adam, it’s me and your mom, can we talk?” Bernard asked. They heard movement before the door opened. Adam wiped his eyes with a nod. “Sure, come in.” He walked back over to his bed as Bernard and Alene walked into his room. They didn’t know how Adam got any work done with the mess in his room, but they didn’t comment on it. Alene moved a pile of clothes off Adam’s bed and took a seat. Bernard took a seat in the chair by Adam’s desk. He rolled the chair forward until he was in arm’s reach.
“Now Adam what’s wrong?” Bernard asked.
Adam shrugged.
“Honey, did something happen?” Alene asked.
“Are you fighting with your siblings?” Bernard asked.
“No,” Adam muttered.
“Why did you cut Kia off? She’s worried she did something.” Alene said.
“I cut her off because I wanted to think about this alone.” Adam said.
“Adam, does this have something to do with a job?” Bernard asked.
“Kinda, but it’s not what you think. No one knows my identity or anything like that.” Adam picked at his jeans.
“What is it?” Bernard asked.
“Um, well, there is this guy that works in my office. He fixes our computers and all the other technology problems that we have. His name is Tommy, but we call him Zero because he knows coding and stuff. My problem is,” Adam sighed, “He knows about thieves and his family is good at it like us. I think I like him and not in a full professional or friendly way. I know you guys accepted Chris and all, but Issac told me his mom flipped when he told her about liking a guy. So I guess what I’m asking is, if I said I really liked Zero would you two mind?”
Alene hugged Adam, sighing in relief. “Oh dear, of course we wouldn’t mind!”
Bernard joined Alene, rubbing Adam’s hair affectionately. “We wouldn’t, you had me worried. I thought something major happened like you lost the item or blew your cover in the middle of a job in enemy territory. You liking Zero in more of a professional way is okay. Is that what you were worried about?”
Adam nodded. “Yeah because Izzy said his mom freaked. She was going to kick him out if his dad didn’t say anything about it. I thought you would do the same for me.”
“Honey, we love and accept anyone who decides to win your heart. It doesn’t matter who they are male or female.” Alene pressed a kiss to Adam’s hair.
Bernard nodded as he squeezed Adam’s shoulder. “We do, as long as they treat you right then we’re okay. He’s not like Christina is he?”
Adam shook his head. “No,”
Bernard smiled. “Then I can’t wait to meet him.”
“Me either, but don’t think we won’t accept who you are.” Alene said.
“We accept you and we love you. Never forget that Adam. We love you and your brothers and sisters the same. What we do for one we do for the others.” Bernard said.
Adam started to smile slowly. “So, you two are okay with it?”
“Yes we are,” Alene squeezed Adam again.
Bernard nodded. “I know there are parents out there who are like us.”
“Don’t forget that,” Alene said.
Adam smiled, returning the hug. “Thanks mom, thanks dad.” He leaned over and hugged Bernard. Bernard smiled, rubbing Adam’s back. “You’re welcome, now I think you have to explain something to Kia. I’m sure she’s worried sick.”
“Oh yeah she is!” Adam stood up from the bed. “I opened the connection again and you guys are right, she is worried. I’ll go find her now. Thanks,” He hugged Alene and Bernard again before jogging out the room.
Alene grinned. “I’m glad it was nothing serious.”
“Me too, but I didn’t know Kisa felt that way. No wonder Issac has been here for awhile.” Bernard said.
“I didn’t think anything of it, since Issac is here all the time. I hope he’s alright.” Alene bit her nail a worried look on her face.
Bernard took Alene’s other hand, linking their fingers together. “We can check on him before he goes out with Adam and Kia for their job.”
Alene squeezed his hand. “I would like that.”
Bernard kissed Alene’s cheek and got up from the bed. They stepped over piles of clothes and books on their way out the room. I have to tell Adam to clean this room soon. I don’t want Leon to slither in Albert’s room again. Bernard closed the door behind them.
*~*~*
Bernard walked into the kitchen while Alene returned to the schedule in the living room. He smiled at Michelle sitting at the table with Susie, Antonio, and Orion.
“Hi sweetie,” Bernard kissed Michelle’s cheek.
Michelle giggled. “Hi dad,”
“Are you going out tonight?” Bernard asked taking a seat at the table.
“I hope I can. I have a bit of a headache tonight.” Michelle said.
“Oh what’s wrong? Trouble at work,” Bernard said.
Michelle nodded. “Yes, I have a client who feels that she’s entitled to everything her husband owns. Even artifacts passed down throughout his family.” She sighed. “It’s exhausting,”
“Sounds like Christina to me,” Bernard said.
Michelle laughed. “She does remind me of her, but I was thinking more of Carla. I know she demanded something when her and Enzi split.”
“She did, but they weren’t married and even then she’s not entitled to artifacts.” Bernard said.
“I’ve been trying to tell my client that, but she won’t listen. I can’t wait for my job tonight. I get to go to my favorite part of town.” Michelle smiled.
“You’ll be working with your favorite person too.” Susie cooed as Michelle flushed lightly. She turned to Susie hissing at her to be quiet. Susie laughed as Bernard grinned. “This must be a special person. Who are they?”
“Just someone I like working with. He’s called the Wild Wolf and is a whiz at picking locks. He’s as good as Angel.” Michelle said.
“Wow, it’s hard to find someone that pick locks as good as Angel. Is he really that good or is there some biased in this?”
Michelle flushed. “Dad!”
Bernard shared a laugh with everyone around the table. It was rare to see Michelle talk about a person she liked. Bernard couldn’t wait to meet him. He had to make sure that guy was right for Michelle after all.
*~*~*
“Okay dad, we’re ready!” Kia called out as Adam adjusted his mask.
“Here I come!” Bernard walked into the foyer with Alene close behind.
After dinner, everyone in the house prepared for their jobs. Seth left the notice to the police department and his favorite officer. Albert fussed with Christophe’s outfit with an amused Christophe. Angelique and Susie popped out of the lab, walked into the kitchen, and left with a few bowls. No one asked.
Enzi hummed placing on his top hat. Michelle tied her hair up and put on her mask. Issac slipped his goggles on pulling his red hair in a low ponytail. Angelique walked out the lab with Susie again. They closed and locked the door. No one questioned it. Angelique smoothed down her outfit, tying a ribbon with a bell on it around her neck. Susie fixed her ghoulish outfit.
“It looks like you’re ready to go.” Bernard pulled some lint off Enzi’s sleeves.
“Before you do, it’s time for the check, now items?” Alene asked.
“Yes,” the room sounded.
“The code for the door if one of you comes home late,” Alene smoothed Angelique’s hair down.
“Yes,”
“Cell phones?”
“Yes,”
Alene smiled. “Okay, be safe. Angel, Al, Susie no bringing home anyone for a “friendly” experiment.”
“Okay,” Angelique said as Albert and Susie groaned in disappointment.
“We can always do one later.” Angelique whispered. Albert and Susie perked up, Christophe laughed.
Kia giggled. “Alright, see ya!” She grabbed Adam’s hand and disappeared in a flash of fire. Everyone in the room started disappearing in a similar fashion. Bernard stopped Issac before he disappeared.
“Yes, Mr. Winchester?” Issac asked.
“If you want to talk just ask. Don’t hesitate either.” Bernard said.
Issac pulled up his goggles in surprise. “Mr. Win--”
“Don’t. Hesitate.” Bernard repeated, emphasizing each word.
Issac grinned pulling the goggles down. “Sure thing, thanks,”
Bernard returned it. “You’re welcome,” He watched Issac leave right after Seth.
Alene placed a hand on Bernard’s arm. “I’m going to go have a drink in the living room. Are you coming?”
“I’m right behind you.” Bernard walked into the living room. He took a seat stretching his legs out.
“Busy day, as usual,” Alene mused filling their glasses.
“Yeah, but the day that ends I’m going to be worried.” Bernard chuckled accepting his glass.
Alene laughed. “That’s true, I will miss the chaos. Let’s enjoy it while we can.”
Bernard chuckled. “Too true,” He raised the glass to his lips when the phone sounded. He reached over hitting the speaker button. “Hello?”
“Hi dad,”
“Hi Bello,”
“Hi sweetie,”
“Hi mom, how was your day?” Bello asked.
Bernard sat back with a smile. “Oh you know, just the same old thing.” Alene laughed leaning her head against Bernard’s shoulder. “How was yours?”
“Well, you know dad, same old day.” Bello said.
Bernard couldn’t agree more.
