Summary: the courtship of Stella West.
Notes: silly but hey, Joseph’s POV and I had fun with this. The point of this is probably me getting to write that punch line.

When Dennis pushes him toward the blonde and she smiles at him warmly, a drink in hand, and hugs him before even introducing herself, Joseph is already having a hard time thinking straight.

He doesn’t mind it when girls are straight-forward, he thinks he’s gotten used to it by now but there is something about Stella that makes her stand out.

By the time she is riding Dennis around piggy-back, either demanding he go faster or laughing hysterically, Joseph only has eyes for her.

“You have a crush,” Dennis says on the way back home in an annoying sing-songy voice and Joseph wants to punch his best friend but that probably won’t be all that good considering that he wants to ask him for a pretty big favor.

“How long have you known her?”

“Stella?” Dennis shrugs. “Dunno, about two weeks. We got thrown out of class and hung out couple times. She’s pretty amazing if you ask me.”

“I’m gonna ask you if you’ve ever slept with her instead.”

“Not yet and now that you’re interested, she’s dead to me,” Dennis assured him.

Dennis makes sure they meet again by pointing Joseph to the spot in the library she seems to always be hanging out at when she’s trying to study. He feels like a stalker, waiting, more or less hidden between the bookshelves at odd hours and it’s only after several tries that he runs into her.

She’s reading a book and marking every sentence in it in a different color, it seems from what Joseph can gather.

“Ulysses,” she explains without looking up. “Four different narratives. And no need to spy and hide; I already saw you almost twenty minutes ago.”

It’s much easier to spend time with Stella once she and Dennis who are in many of the same classes decide that they should start studying together. Mostly, it happens in Dennis and Joseph’s apartment and once Stella gets bored, she will come over to Joseph’s room to chitchat, sometimes try to talk him into joining them.

“If you don’t want to study with us, then you have to at least buy me a drink later to show me that you don’t dislike me.” She winks and Joseph can’t possibly turn her request down.

What surprises him is that Dennis doesn’t come along to the bar, makes excuses about having a meeting he doesn’t in fact have. Stella doesn’t seem to to have a problem with this at all, hooking her arm into his as they walk to the bar.

Once she has ordered her drink, she sighs and leans back. “You know, Dennis was surprisingly understanding when I told him that I wanted to spend some time alone with you. He’s a better friend than I thought he was.”

Joseph almost chokes on his drink.

Her hair was messy and stood on end when she woke up the next morning and pulled on Joseph’s hair until he was awake, too.

They were tangled up in each other, both in his bed but more or less dressed, her in an undershirt and leggings she had been wearing under her dress the night before.

“I could get used to waking up next to you,” Joseph teased and Stella grinned.

“You’ll have to put more initiative into pursuing me if you want to make this a regular thing or want me to sleep in your bed naked sometime.”

***

They stay in bed, talking, teasing each other and Joseph doesn’t put any thought into it when she suddenly jumps into his lap and kisses him, her lips soft against his.

“I could get used to doing that,” she smiles, rubbing her nose against his. “And you. I think you especially.”

“I think I’ve already gotten more than used to the idea that I am head over heels for you to change anything about that, so I wouldn’t mind at all.” He pulled her head down toward him again for another kiss.

When he brings her flowers to their official first date -- red roses -- she seems completely floored by it and a little later he manages to coax out of her that nobody has ever gotten her flowers before.

“Not even to, I don’t know, prom?”

“I spent prom night in a prison cell sobering up and listening to policemen lecture me about disorderly conduct. I have no idea what prom was like, but I don’t think I would have had that much fun there.”

He makes a mental note to ask Dennis if Stella has a criminal record.

***

He doesn’t mind that whenever Stella isn’t spending time with him, she is hanging out with Dennis, watching movies with him, going out for drinks and to parties. He thinks he would have minded if it was anyone else but he knows Dennis poses no danger, that he will keep an eye on Stella and that all they’ll ever be is friends.

One night, when he’s already sleeping, she comes into his room, almost falling over her own feet. Dennis is close behind.

“She’s gonna have to sleep here. We’re too drunk to walk up the stairs to her apartment.”

“You never makes me dinner,” Dennis complains as he comes into the kitchen to find Joseph chopping tomatoes and onions. His eyes widen. “Is this bolognese? Are you making your mom’s secret bolognese sauce?”

He is almost red in the face, so offended by this oversight.

“I was going to make too much so you’d be able to live on it for about two days,” Joseph admits while Stella sits at the kitchen table watching and laughing.

“Two days sounds okay,” Dennis pouts, still not completely happy.

“You could just eat with us,” Stella suggests and Dennis’ smile widens.

“I see why he wouldn’t budge,” Stella says later, after dinner, when they go back to Joseph’s room. “I might come by tomorrow just to get some of the leftovers.”

“He won’t share,” Joseph reminded her. “This is his favorite dish.”

“I’m not surprised.” She rolls over on the bed and Joseph lies down next to her. “By the way, I was going to sleep with you tonight, but I’m so stuffed on your food that I’m having trouble rolling over, so let’s not even talk about sex.”

“I got cock-blocked by spaghetti?” Joseph asks incredulously.

“Sure looks like it.”
