One minute he's fine, dusting tiny kisses across her jaw, holding her close against him. The next he's dizzy, his right side numb, collapsing against her because he can't stand up.
She calls 911, and sits on the floor, his head in her lap, holding his hand. Minutes tick past and she talks to him endlessly, tells him everything she hasn't been saying. I didn't go shopping Monday. I had surgery. I'm dying. I'm sorry.

He is dead by the time the ambulance arrives.
She'll never know how much he understood.
