Notes: Takes place in May 2013. Somewhat rewrites the end of "The Little Things You Give Away", but this is more in-character for Adrianna now that I've developed her more.
Story:
Phase; the title of this is "The Little Things I Give You."
Summary: Adrianna after turning Sarah down for the last time.
"I love you."
Adrianna internally winced when Sarah said, though she managed a small, but possibly somewhat exaggerated smile on the outside. "I know you do."
Sarah smiled in return, but Adrianna saw something shift in her eyes. She thought it might have been acceptance, but Sarah looked away and stood before she could truly tell. "I guess I'll go downstairs and make sure you get in a taxi," she said, turning to walk towards the door.
It was only because Sarah couldn't see her that she did wince again. She could hear the hope in Sarah's voice, but she hated telling people no. She hated confrontations. "Thanks. It is really late. Technically, very early. I think I'll be able to sleep now, anyway."
Adrianna followed Sarah downstairs and around the building, though she shook her head in exasperation and partial amusement when Sarah wasn't looking. Sarah's offer was sweet, she supposed, but she didn't think Sarah, three inches shorter than her, would be able to do much more to any attacker than she could.
After Sarah had flagged down a cab for her, Adrianna gave her a smile as she opened the back door. "Thank you for the flowers, by the way. You're a good friend, Sarah." Sarah's shoulders slumped a bit, but Adrianna still pressed a completely chaste kiss against her cheek. "And you'll find someone much more compatible with you than I am." She got into the cab before Sarah could really respond, like the recreant she was.
Sarah waved goodbye. Adrianna did not. It wasn't goodbye, after all.
