Summary: It’s a solitary housewarming for Adele Merritt.
Notes: RaTsers, don’t you dare be modest, link me to the most awesome pieces you’ve posted since I disappeared! Even if you don’t read this. Hopefully I’ll be able to play catch up with the rest too. :< Apparently when Adele wants out of your brain, there’s no point in trying to stop her. She’s twenty in this.

With one of her blade-sharp eyebrows far higher than the other, Adele Merritt drank up the appearance of the room with a couple of deft turns of the head. Stalking further into the centre, she waited impatiently while the young man that was showing her around strode in and put her small, light case by her feet.

“Well,” he said in a flat, inexpressive voice. “This is it.”

Adele nodded. Indeed it was.

“You don’t have much stuff,” the man commented, sounding utterly unsurprised.

Twirling on her high heels, Adele pinned him with her trademark glare, stabbing nightmare-coloured eyes into his. Something people would come to recognise, though she wasn’t even close to what she would one day become. Not yet. Her face was clean of make-up and her hair cut into a sleek bob; she wore a plum-coloured blouse tucked into a tight, dark grey skirt.

“Thank you,” she said sharply. “You can go now.”

And she watched him as he shrank back a little and then scurried out of the room.

While rooting around in the handbag dangling from her elbow with one hand, she clip-clopped across the hard white tiles of her new home towards one of the large windows. After fishing out a pack of cigarettes, she hefted the window open and closed her eyes against the breeze that immediately flushed into the room, pushing strands of hair out around her face.

It was cool and quite strong-because she was so high up, she supposed. She rested her forehead against the glass of the bottom panel of the window, tucking her chin down, tugging a lighter from her pocket and lighting up a cigarette with extreme efficiency.

The way she did everything.

“It’s not for long,” she murmured around the cigarette once it was lit, smoke escaping from the sides of her mouth. Then she plucked it out between two fingers and glanced once again around the bland, empty room that was to be hers for the duration of her time as an employee of Nutriware Ltd. Really. It isn’t.

Nonetheless, she wasn’t too sure about Horatio Newson’s ability to keep true to his so-called promises.

Leaning her hip against the windowsill, she took a deep soak of her cigarette and her eyes closed again.
