The calls start coming at two in the afternoon on a sunny Thursday. Michael’s in class when it happens, so it isn’t until he unlocks the door to his apartment and spots the flashing red three on the answering machine that he knows.
beep
"Michael, it's me. I-- call me. As soon as you get this, call-- just call me."
beep
"It's me again. Charles. It's really-- it's really important that you call me, okay? Maybe you're in class or something..."
beep
"Please, Michael, where are you?"
Heart pounding, Michael locates the phone under a pile of mail and dials with shaking fingers. He’s never heard his brother sound like this before-- panicked and frantic all at once. It takes only three rings for someone to breathlessly answer.
"Michael, is that you?"
"Charles?" Michael drops his bookbag on the floor and begins to pace. "What's going on? Your messages scared the shit out of me."
"We've got to go home, right away. There was a fire this morning--"
"Home? Fire? What are you talking about?" He suddenly stills, knees weakening as his throat tightens. “Have you talked to Mom and Dad?”
“Take the first flight out.” Charles voice briefly cracks, but he barrels on. “Just use whatever’s in your account to pay for it, as long as it’s the first flight, okay? I'll see you when you get to Providence."
"Charles, what's going--"
"Mom and Dad are dead," comes the choked reply, immediately followed by the gut-wrenching sound of weeping. "Mom and Dad are dead."
