The birds chirping outside brought my attention to the window, this morning. I still had a dull headache, but it was manageable. Phoenix wasn't in the bed beside me, but I expected it. She was wonderful this whole time during my ordeal. I tried to move my body up and winced as my ribs protested with the action. Doctors had told me that I had a couple of months to heal, but that I needed to take it easy and do only what my body allowed.
Hell, I had no problem with that!
It's fuzzy about all that happened, but I do remember flying off that bronco and the pain the slight kick to the head and the hooves stamping on my chest made. 3 broken ribs was no joke, but honestly, I was glad it wasn't worse. I know I could have been injured more badly than this. So I was truly grateful to God for saving my life. Now it was time to rest up and recuperate.
The door to the bedroom opened and I watched Fire walk inside holding a tray of food awkwardly, because of the quilted blanket under her right arm. At my questionable look, she explained, " I brought your medicine and some breakfast." She then motioned to the quilt. "Cheyenne made this for you;you know how motherly she is." I smirked.
Boy, did I know. Cheyenne was a close to a mother as my own mother was.
"Yeah, I know."
Phoenix chuckled, stirring my tea and nodding. I glanced down at her hand, loving how the engagement ring shone in the slight sunlight. She looked back at me, smiled soft then brought over my tray. I rubbed my hands together, anticipating the eggs, sausage and bacon. Fire put the tray in front of me though and I was face to face with...
...mush. Oatmeal to be exact. I couldn't keep in my disappointment.
"Uh, you're missing the main ingredients, bosswoman."
"What's that?"
"The meat!"
Firebird's eyes flickered with amusement and a hint of vexation. "Oh, no...thank you, Phoenix! For taking the time out of your work day to make my breakfast for me." She exclaimed, pretending to be me in a mocking tone while putting a hand on her chest.
I smirked at how brazen she was being and rolled my eyes saying, "What? It would have taken 5 minutes to make some bacon."
My fiancée came to sit on the bed beside me, putting my spoon in the hot cereal and shook her head. "I can't believe how ungrateful you're being, Mr. Kincannon! You could at least taste it! Here."
Before I could say a word, the spoon was in my mouth and I moaned, tasting the sweetness immediately. It was as if she had made this for a five star restaurant, it was so good.
"Mmm...ohh, lady..this is so..."
Phoenix finished the sentence with a smug look. "Good? Yeah, I know. All that talk you were doing earlier too." Her smile was beaming.
I took the spoon out of my mouth and got another spoonful, forgetting all about the bacon. This bunch tasted just as sweet in my mouth as the first. "My goodness. What did you put in here, babe?"
Phoenix smiled proudly. "I put in some milk, sugar, sweet cream, cinnamon, and lots of butter. My mom used to make it like this when I was sick."
"Quite awesome of her, I must say."
"Yeah. So now since you're not well, I made it for you."
I smiled and with my left arm, pulled her down til she was nose to nose with me. My lips connected with hers and we both let out a moan at how sweet the kiss really was. My hand intertwined in her auburn hair and her hand stroked my face slow.
When we broke the kiss, I kept my eyes on her jade orbs, my next words the complete truth.
"I'm so happy that you're going to be my wife, lady."
Phoenix smiled. "Likewise, Cowboy." She then laid down beside me with her head on my shoulder and she even took care not to put too much weight on the arm she put on my chest.
It didn't matter...I couldn't feel a thing right now anyway.
