Title: Protection
Summary: Eric is walking home when he sees a werewolf looking like it might be preying on a couple.
Eric walked home in a thunderstorm, the wind blowing the rain into his face, thunder claps could be heard in the distance. The sky was pitch black and it sometime close to midnight, another late night at work. Eric was exhausted, too tired to complain about the storm when the weather had been beautiful only a few hours before.
He kept his eyes open, watching the shadows in the alleyways for anything suspicious. He hated that he lived in a world where people had to watch for supernatural predators, like the human ones weren't bad enough.
Eric and Gabby had no leads on the murders from the previous night. It was looking more and more like Gabby was right, that there were more wereanimals in the city then just the wolves. Eric knew that spelt trouble because the werewolves and vampires would not let other creatures into their territory without a fight. He didn't want to have to deal with another supernatural turf war, the constant jostling for higher positions in the packs caused enough problems.
Eric was only a few blocks from his apartment building when he saw movement in front of him. There was a young couple that was more then a little tipsy stumbling towards him. Eric could hear their laughter as they came closer. In the shadows of an alley just a few meters from the couple he saw an animal crouching.
The creature was a wolf, crouching in the shadows, hidden from the view of couple. It was a werewolf, Eric was sure of it, since it was a little bigger then wild wolves and wild wolves didn't wander through cities. The werewolf hadn't noticed Eric yet, as far as he could tell.
Eric reached for his gun, the cool metal under his hands calming him down. The wolf moved, running into the middle of the sidewalk before stopping and looking at the couple. Eric didn't wait, didn't give the creature a chance to attack before shooting the wolf.
The wolf yelped after the first bullet hit it but Eric continued to pump the bullets into it until it lay unmoving on the ground. Eric held the gun out as he approached the body cautiously. The couple looked at Eric in shock, sitting down on the curb probably out of a combination of fear and drunkenness. Eric figured the couple wouldn't be going too far anytime soon, even with the rain still coming down.
The wolf lay motionless of the ground for a moment before it changed back to its human shape in front of Eric. He breathed a sigh of relief as pressed his fingers to the body's neck, to make sure there was no pulse but he knew that werewolves that were killed in wolf form would turn back to their human shape.
The man had dirty blonde hair and was thinly built. He had sharp features with a scar that cut down his left cheek from his eye to his mouth, a memento of a pack fight. His neck had the distinctive scars of vampire bite marks.
He was a vampire's pet, Eric thought to himself as he pulled out his phone to call for backup, while walking towards the couple that still sat on the sidewalk.
Eric knew he just lost any chance of sleeping that night but hoped this was one of the wolves responsible for the murders. Not that the public would care, to them one less werewolf was always a good thing.
