Right now we got to keep the faith

There is fifteen minutes left, according to the clock. For the first time in a long time Ryan feels calm. The T.V. is off and the phone is off the hook. The laptops are shutdown, put away in their bags. Their cellphones are off, Ryan's pretty sure they were left in bedroom. Jasper looks calm on the outside as they lounge in silence on the couch but Ryan isn't sure how long it will last.

"I love you Jasper," Ryan says, causing Jasper to jump, obviously lost in his thoughts.

"Love you too," Jasper says with a tight smile and Ryan can see the stress starting to show, the façade starting to crack.

"I'm going to be here, no matter what they say. You know that right?" Ryan says, reaching a hand out to cover Jasper's.

"I know. Are you going to be ok? When they start asking about you?" Jasper asks and Ryan can see the worry in his eyes.

"I'll be fine," Ryan just hopes that his smile doesn't look fake. He knows that the next month is going to a media circus with Jasper at the center and Ryan will be the second person they interview. Ryan hates being asked the same way-too-personal questions over and over again. He hates being the center of attention, it makes him want to hide away, makes him not want to talk.

"You hungry?" Jasper asks after a few minutes of silence, looking for a distraction from his thoughts. Ryan knows that he's trying not to think about what will be coming up soon and Ryan's trying to avoid that line of thought too.

"No," Ryan replies, too nervous to eat. "Do you have anyone else you need to call?"

"Everyone who matters knows," Jasper says shortly and Ryan remembers the past days of going through an old address book to make sure everyone was remembered. He also remembered the phone calls that ended with the phone being slammed down and Jasper not talking while he wallowed in his anger.

As silence falls over them again, Ryan slowly moves down the couch, closer to the ball player till he is cuddled into Jasper's side.

"Alex told me to tell you 'keep the faith'," Ryan says as he feels Jasper start to shake from nervousness.

"Tell him I will," Jasper says, voice shaking, before taking a deep breath, calming down enough that only his muscles are tense. Ryan looks at the clock on the DVD player, realizing they only have five minutes left. Ryan needs to remind himself how to breath as the anxiety starts to creep up on him. He's pretty sure that having a nervous breakdown will not keep Jasper calm.

Ryan looks up as he hears Jasper mumbling to himself under his breath. The baseball player speaks too quietly for Ryan to catch most of it but from the brief snatches he guesses that Jasper is giving himself a pep talk, trying to get rid of the nerves, remind himself why he's doing this. Ryan looks at the blank T.V., trying to give Jasper privacy, and notices they only have two minutes left.

Jasper reaches for the remote on the coffee table and turns on the T.V., hand shaking as he flips through the channels till he reaches ESPN. He feels like he can't breathe and he can't imagine how Jasper is doing. At the same time, as the commercials fly by, it feels like another cold winter night and they are just curled up watching T.V. not waiting for the other shoe to drop.

He hears Jasper swear as the commercials change to the ESPN Special title card, the DVD player telling him there is no more time left. Ryan squeezes Jasper's hand in comfort and gets ready to watch Jasper Bennet become the first MLB player to come out of the closet.
