Molly cried hysterically; Billy, always more introverted, just sat white-faced. Aaron held them both tight, arms around their shoulders for what little comfort it was.
Ivy came out after a painful wait, looking exhausted. She met his eyes first, before she crouched to talk to the twins; he knew the answer then.
"I'm sorry," she said, gently. "Pepper didn't make it."
Molly went on crying. Billy looked between his father and aunt, eyes huge.
"It's okay," Aaron said-- had to say something. "Pepper's in heaven now."
Judging from their expressions, it wasn't enough.
Not for him, either. But he'd tried.
