Story Arc: Changing Tides
Title: Name that food
Summary: Helen and Carl play their favorite game Name that Food while Nate watch in amazement.
Notes: I don't know why it took me so long to connect this word to Helen. I thought about Adam, but figured it wouldn't work. Though it would work for Helen because she wants to be a gourmet chef. Nate can't decided between a career in science, music, or business. Well enjoy oh and I looked up the recipes here. I apologize for any repetition I'm a bit tired.

After another heated kissing session, Helen and Nate finally decided on a movie. They chose a comedy making sure it wasn’t a romantic comedy this time. Helen and Nate sat on the couch paying little attention to the movie. Helen rested her head on Nate’s shoulder while Nate rested his arm around her waist. They felt better now that their feelings were out in the open. There was much to talk about, but that could wait until later.

A few minutes in, Helen looked up at Nate. “Hey can we go get something to eat?”

Nate smiled pressing a kiss on her cheek. “Of course we can. You didn’t have to ask though you’re welcome here.”

Helen smiled sheepishly, “I know, but I’m a guest. It’s only polite.”

“Another reason why my mom loves you, but we can go downstairs together if you want.” Nate said.

“Aren’t you hungry?” Helen asked.

“Yes I am, but not for food.” Nate said smirking. He ran his thumb over Helen’s bottom lip as Helen flushed lightly. She swallowed a little shakily, “Um I don’t mind we can go down together.”

“Sounds like a great idea. The food sounds good too.” Nate said with the same smirk. Helen looked at Nate until the joke hit her. Her eyes widened a little before she smiled sheepishly. Helen shook her head before getting up from the sofa. Nate chuckled following behind Helen’s quickly retreating form. He couldn’t wait to tease her some more.

*~*~*

Helen couldn’t believe she let Nate catch her off guard with that joke. She had to get him back before the day was done. Helen felt her face heat up at the thought the joke provided. It wasn’t the first time she thought about that and Nate. She was thankful her skin prevented the color to spread across her cheeks. A pair of arms caught Helen as she walked through the door.

Nate smiled walking in the kitchen with her. “Aww what’s a matter? I didn’t offend you did I?”

Helen turned with a smile, “Of course not. It’s me after all I just wasn’t expecting it.”

Nate kissed her cheek, “I know that what makes it great. I’m gonna tease you so much.” He finished in a whisper. Helen shivered lightly wrapping her arms around his neck. “You know I’m gonna have to return it.”

“Can’t wait,” Nate said softly leaning forward to kiss Helen. Helen closed her eyes waiting for the kiss when an amused chuckle broke their haze. They looked over at Carl who walked in carrying two bottles of wine. Carl smiled nodding in approval at their closeness. “I’m very happy to see this change in events.”

Nate and Helen smiled sheepishly at Carl. Nate stepped back a bit, rubbing the back of his neck. “Yeah things changed,”

“For the better,” Helen finished, trying her hardest not to play with her hands.

“Well I have to say I don’t object. It’s nice to see you with such a beautiful and respectable woman.” Carl said.

Nate flushed lightly as Helen smiled, “Thank you Carl, but you’re making me blush.”

“Only telling the truth, so tell me are you staying for dinner?” Carl asked.

Helen nodded, “Yes I am.”

“Wonderful! Now that you’re going to be here for dinner, want to play our game?” Carl asked.

“Sure I need to brush up on my food knowledge for the exam.” Helen said walking over to the island in the kitchen.

“I’m glad you’re here to play with him. Carl does this all the time just to stump us.” Nate said taking a seat next to Helen.

“With all the dinners you go to it’s important to know the food being served.” Carl said behind the refrigerator door.

“It is, you might be served something you don’t want. That wouldn’t be good.” Helen said.

Nate shrugged, “As long as it smells and tastes good it’s fine by me.”

Helen giggled as Carl shook his head. “Of course,” He bumped around the kitchen taking out plates, checking meat, and pulling out different spice. Nate looked over seeing the excitement in Helen’s eyes. He smiled food and food preparation always made Helen happy. Nate could see Helen itching to go over to the stove and help Carl cook. He knew she would make a wonderful chef.

After thirty minutes, Carl finished his meals. He placed food on five plates placing it in front of Helen. He placed a fork and spoon in front of her with a smile.

“Time to play name this dish. I’ve made five gourmet meals from different places around the world. Can you name them all?” Carl asked.

Helen nodded, “I’m sure I can.”

“Alright what’s the first one?” Carl asked. Helen dipped her fork in the plate. She placed the food in her mouth chewing it slowly. Helen swallowed before nodding, “This is grilled tuna and peppers with caper vinaigrette.”

“Very good and this one,” Carl said pointing to the bowl of soup.

Helen picked up the spoon repeating the process. “Pesto Pea Soup,”

“Great and this one,” Carl asked.

“Celery and Octopus salad with chile and lemon, this must be something Virgil left over.” Helen said.

Nate nodded, “It is.”

Carl chuckled, “Yep now this one,”

“Capellini with shrimp and creamy tomato sauce,” Helen said.

“Wonderful, now this one.” Carl said.

“Ramp soup,” Helen said placing her spoon down.

Carl smiled, “Wonderful Helen you got them all right.”

“Thanks I’m glad I did. It’s been a while since I looked at any recipes and I thought I was rusty.” Helen said.

“If that’s you rusty, then I can’t wait to see when you’re behind the stove.” Carl said smiling.

Helen giggled, “Thanks Carl,”

“Wow that was cool Helen. I didn’t know you knew so many recipes.” Nate said. He watched the whole game in awe it was amazing. Nate loved watching Helen confident in her field. Helen smiled sheepishly, “Thank you, but it’s nothing.”

Nate shook his head, “That doesn’t look like nothing. That’s amazing I can’t do any of that.”

“Yeah well you’re good in science and business. Not to mention music.” Helen said.

“Now that’s nothing it just comes easy to me.” Nate said.

“I think it’s cool.” Helen said.

Nate flushed lightly with a light smile. “Thanks.”

“Let me get you something to eat before you forget about it.” Carl said taking the bowls and plates away.

“Alright,” Helen said.

“Cool and I can’t wait to see another tasting.” Nate said. Helen leaned over to his ear, “I can’t wait to taste something soon.” She pressed a kiss to cheek before sitting back correctly. Helen smiled in satisfaction at the flush on Nate’s ears. She loved getting him back.
