"How is holding your cat's eyes open and squeezing medicine into them the easy part?" Mike needs a favor from Darcy. A really big one, apparently.
notes: I mentioned Mike's cat in a character meme and Shayna wanted to see her in a piece. Darcy's pretty scared of her. So this is a pretty bad time for her. Image prompt behind the cut!
"Come on, kitty. Come on out of there…"
Mike crouched down on the kitchen floor to get a better look in the cabinet.
The cat had wedged herself in a back corner, nearly out of reach. Her narrow green eyes stared back at him, as if daring him to make a move.
"Well, we've got her cornered at least," Mike said. He glanced over his shoulder. Darcy had taken her station on the other side of the kitchen, as far away as the floor plan would allow. Her hands were gripping the edge of the counter like she thought she was in danger of slipping through the floor.
"Uh, Darcy? You are going to help me, right?"
She pressed her lips together, looking uncertainly at the open cabinet. "Um. What are my other options?"
With a sigh, Mike pulled the bottle of eye drops from his pocket and held it out to her. "You're doing the easy part, remember?"
Darcy didn't take the offered bottle. "How is holding your cat's eyes open and squeezing medicine into them the easy part?"
"Because I'll be restraining her. Thereby taking the brunt of the damage." She still wasn't taking the bottle. He sighed. "Why are you so afraid of my cat? She's never done anything to you."
"Uh, yeah. Cause I've seen what she does to you and kept my distance. And she likes you. She hates me. I can see it in her eyes."
"Come on, Darcy. It'll be over in ten seconds and then we can go out."
Darcy closed her eyes and made a face, but after a second she stepped forward to reluctantly take the bottle. "You owe me big," she said. "Like In-And-Out and ice cream big."
"Your assistance is appreciated," Mike said. He took a deep breath. "Okay, so I'll reach in and grab Paul-"
"Why do you call her Paul? Is it short for something? Paula? Pauline?"
"Darcy-"
"Paulette maybe? Why doesn't she have a girl's name?"
"Would you stop stalling and help me?"
"Why do you even have that cat? Why don't you get a better cat? One that likes to sit in your lap and play with yarn and isn't out for blood?"
Mike shot her a look. She cringed. "Okay, okay, I'm sorry! I'll do it, I'll do it. Don't hate me!"
"Let's just get this over with," Mike said. He dropped to his knees and takes another look in the cabinet; Paul hadn't moved. She was still waiting, poised to defend herself against the great injustice that is eye drops.
"Here," Darcy said. "Take this." Something nudged against his shoulder and he looked back to see her offering an oven mitt.
"It's okay," he said. "I'll get a better hold on her without."
"What about these?" Darcy held up a pair of kitchen tongs.
"I don't think so."
"How about this?" When Mike turned this time, more than ready to tell her to , Darcy was brandishing a rolling pin in her right hand.
"Darcy!" Where did she even find that?
"On second thought," she said, adjusting the grip on the rolling pin. "I better hold onto this. Just in case."
"Put that down! You are not going to brain my cat."
"Okay, okay! Geez! Don't look at me like that!"
With an audible sigh, Mike turned back to the cabinet. "Just get the eyedrops ready," he muttered. Then, steeling himself, he reached into the cabinet.
Paul had the knack to quickly turn from a fluffy grey tabby to an angry ball of sharp edges. Mike gritted his teeth as he tried to get ahold of the twisting cat. Once he managed to get control of her legs, she retaliated by biting his hand at least three times. Darcy hovered above them with the eyedrops.
"Darcy, hurry up!"
"I'm trying! She's moving too much!"
"Just hold her eye open!"
"Okay, okay, I got it. I got it. I'm-eek!"
Maybe it was Darcy's sudden shriek, or maybe the fact that Paul had gotten a leg loose and taken a really brutal swipe at his arm but for a second, he let his guard down and Paul squirmed away and made a run for it.
Mike looked between the new scratch on his arm and the corner Paul had disappeared around. "What happened?"
Darcy held a hand to her chest. "Her eyes. She looked at me. She knows."
"What does she know?" Mike asked through his teeth, pressing a hand to the scratch on his forearm.
"She knows what I did to her. She'll be out to get me now!" Darcy gasped, very grave. "What if I can't come over anymore?"
Mike decided not to dignify that with a response. "Did you at least get her the eye drops?"
She offered a sheepish grin, walking her fingers across the counter. "Only the left eye."
Mike slumped back against the cabinet. "So we have to do this again?"
"Or you could get another cat."
"Darcy."
"Sorry," she said, scuffing her sneaker against the linoleum.
After a few seconds, she looked up. "You want to use the oven mitt this time?"
...Yeah, there was not much of a point to that XD
