"So," Aaron says, that evening at their usual place, "hypothetically, what would you do if you accidentally framed your sister for murder?"

Maria fingers her drink thoughtfully. "Which sister?" she asks, after a long moment.

He thinks it over. None of her sisters are very like his-- although he supposes Mina is comparable to Summer, from what he's heard, he really can't think of one even remotely like Ivy-- but he gives it his best shot. "Say... Isabella."

Maria shrugs. "Well, Leo would get her acquitted if he knows what's good for him. But I suppose I'd frame someone else, as a precaution. Now what exactly did you do?"

"Hypothetically," he says, after checking for inconvienent listeners, "I... may have killed Lars."

The whole story comes out, after that.

She sighs when he's finished, and gives him a Look. Maria is very good at those. He doesn't quail like most people do, but he does wilt a little. "That was stupid," she says.

"Yes," he says, and his frank acknowledgment of that gets him a little nod of not quite approval. "It was. I was careful, though."

"Not careful enough," she says, "if they've arrested your sister."

He rolls his eyes, picks up his Guinness and plays with it, not drinking. "They don't have any actual evidence, just a motive," he says, "and they haven't arrested her yet. I intend to see to it that they don't. Ivy wouldn't actually kill someone." He thinks a bit, then adds, "Probably. Anyway, I know she didn't do it this time."

"Fair enough," she says. "What did you have in mind?"

"His ex." Aaron puts his Guinness back down and begins tracing patterns in the damp ring its base leaves on the bar. "She broke up with him on... Tuesday, I think it was? Very acrimonious. She's the only other one with a reasonable motive, and..." he smiles, showing all his teeth, "she hurt Summer too."

He's pretty sure that Maria doesn't particularly care whether Madison deserves it or not. Well, neither does he, really, but you're not supposed to hurt innocent people, so it's good to know that she's not innocent. Not at all. So he says it anyway.

Maria is looking at him oddly. "I'll do it," she says. "If you want." There's a pause, then she adds, "I think this is too personal to you."

He's touched. That she'd offer, that she'd care enough to make the offer. They don't love each other, obviously, but they're friends, good ones, and that's... something. "All right," he says, because she's right. "I would appreciate that. I don't have any experience in framing anyone, anyway."

She arches her eyebrows, and smiles at him, one of those knowing, intelligent smiles that scare normal people. "And you think I do?"

There's no good way to answer that, not when she's smiling like that, so Aaron doesn't even try. Instead, he says, "Maria. Thank you."

"Well, what are friends for," she says, and has a drink.
